Just a word of caution, I live in a quiet cul-de-sac, my neighbour popped out to her car, turned on the ignition with blowers on full blast, her husband walked 20 feet round the corner to get his van started whilst she was picking up her purse from her kitchen.. a car which had been parked in the corner of the cul-de-sac drove up to the car, out got a passenger who then took off with the car.. appears thieves are quick to adapt!

I leave mine running and use the spare key to lock the door - not that I need it round here, really, but "round here" can be just as likely as anywhere else.
Can't do that on newer cars as they seem to know the car is on and they don't have physical key locks.

Never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.
Its the same opportunity with the Somali pirates.. Rig up a freighter with some .50 calibars and sail it around. When the pirates approach its off with the covers and let rip. And no one lives to warn other pirates.
Youd think the local police would bait a few cars and leavethem running.

I leave mine running and go inside but only when my other car is blocking it into the drive. My house is at one side and a big fence the other so it's trapped in.
Lotus Elise.... It's just a sh** VX220!!

Gosh poor neighbour..i hope that she/they get it back undamaged (unlikely to but i'll keep my fingers crossed for them anyway).
I think it may be a mixture of bad organisation (not getting-up/starting-off fifteen minutes earlier than in summer months), laziness at not wanting to sit in the car waiting for it to heat-up (a simple hot water bottle on your lap would do) and perhaps thoughtlessness at not joining those two ideas together. It's only preparation after all (but then i suppose that's easy to say from the outside looking in).
