Usually the rubber grommets are crimped into the terminal. I think you'll be OK but there is a very remote chance the grommets could migrate down the cable with vibration.


Good point - they were a very tight fit to get all the way in that way, but there is a clip on the end of the plug that secure the grommets in...

Timely reminder though, just about to do the 13 way X2 connector which doesn’t have clips so needs the grommets crimping!!!!

X2 and x3 connectors all done for loom of doom connections!!

I’ve hard wired in the oil switch and check engine light which were separate on the alpha loom, and also wired the fan switch to the ecu rather then the thermo switch on the coolant hose. That way I can adjust the fan on temp...

Next (and final) step is to check off every wire 1 by 1 with the multi meter to double check routing...

Glad I tested each wire 1 by 1 after installation (all 50 of them!!!). Found one from the comma cable with a loose connection into the ecu pkug, all fixed now...

So, quick update. Wiring loom fitted, and ecu / fuses fitted to bulk head.

Whilst I was there, also wrapped the exhaust bend to protect the wheel arch liner...

Checked all the wiring and all ok. SCS software has some good test functionality, so can see the crank syncing so crank sensor is ok, can smell fuel and am able to test the injectors individually and they are ok too.
When I go to test spark at the plugs via the software, it won’t spark.

Changed coil pack, but no difference...

Checked wiring to coil pack and have a good 12v, only dropping to 11v on cranking.

Good continuity across all earths, and good continuity from coil pack connection back to ecu..

Final check was from coil pack trigger wires to earth and I don’t get any continuity when I force ignition in the software, which I would expect.

Starting has been an intermittent fault, and seems to point to ecu ignition trigger. Will investigate a bit more over the weekend

On the weekend I confirmed we have a spark- ecu lets me trigger each one in turn. Plus cranking with the plugs / coil pack testing on the engine shows a good spark...

Another hour in the garage tonight playing with the crank position sensor. Software showed it syncing regardless of which way it is plugged in, and will also show syncing if a different trigger wheel is selected (as long as it’s not too dissimilar). Also tried a new sensor, but same outcome....

So, latest thinking is trigger wheel / timing...

It’s the only vx SCS set up with the 36-1 trigger wheel, so that’s the focus point. Next step is to refit the alpha wheel and try that - there is another vx running that set up with SCS software...

So tonight, swapped the trigger wheel from the ford 36-1 to the alpha 4+1 to see if it will run on that. Another owner is running SCS with that trigger wheel, so I know it works..

PITA job doing that crank pulley bolt though...

Tried it, but failed...

Then put my old alpha ecu on again and have not been able to get it to start for the last week!!!

However, trouble shooting this afternoon and got it running. My old alpha ecu has a mild stage 1 map, so fitted another alpha ecu I have with a stage 2 map on it and it ran (albeit a bit lumpy...)

Looks like my stage 1 map is far enough off to not even start the car - but great joy with the stage 2 alpha!!

Next steps are to double check the ITBs are set up and balanced correctly, and then either ship the car to SCS to be set up, or try for an mot first...

Runs on the alpha stage 2 which will do for me!! Wil be sending it to SCS in the new year for set up with them on a rolling road...
