Vx Turbo Stack Erratic Reading? Sensor?

Hi guys,

 

while driving to the MOT the other (yes it finally passed!!!) I noticed some erratic behaviour of the temperature reading on the instrument cluster.

Temps were fluctuating going up to 82-82, then rapidly dropping a few degrees at a red light, the up again and down again and it went like that for a while. Driving home from the MOT temps were stedy at around 84-86 C.

 

On my previous Rover engined Elise this was a typical behaviour of the coolant sensor being on its way out.

 

How is it on the Turbo normally?

 

I know before I got the car Matt Bentley who was troubleshooting some issues replaced the coolant sensor, but replaced with a used one so not unlikely it is on its way out.

 

Where exactly is the temp sensor located on the turbo, and would someone have the parts number / point me to where I can get one. I have an Opel dealershop close to work so I could pop in and get an OEM one unless they are ludicriously expensive.

 

Any pointers for swapping it would be appreciated to. I will be doing the rad shortly so planned on swapping the sensor at the same time (given that is the usual remedy).

From memory 85-86 was normal on it, used to see 103 coming off track.. 

 

I had the sensor on top of the charge cooler fail once, but that made the temp gauge go to 999c

If you have changed the rad, make sure no air is trapped, that can sometimes be the issue 

Not changed the rad yet. Interesting about the chargecooler sensor, wasn't aware there was one? What does it do? And how is it connected to the stack?

its the MAP sensor, I changed it once then the temp gauge was reading funny temps even from cold
