I had a bit of fun with a R estate. It sounded great and definately definately has the legs on the vrs BUT typically vw driver and was scared of braking late and going round corners / roundabouts fast

Eek! I hate the M135/140 as a drivers car. It's real marmite. I ran mine for a year and couldn't wait to get rid.

  Know what you're saying and I am worried it is more GT car than hot hatch but I need to scratch the 6cyl itch even if its just for a year.   Got the SC VX to fall back on for the excitement.

I've had four flavours of 6-cyl bmw, the e36 m3, e46 m3, e82 135i and f20 m135. To be honest the best of the lot from the drivers seat was the e82, the e46 was the most desirable of the cars but the 135 coupe I had was like a shorter wheelbase m3 (with more torque!). Not sure on prices but if they are cheap enough or under warranty it's a hoot to drive with a performance exhaust.

The 140 B58 is even better imo. SO much torque. And so quick in the dry. Utterly useless in this weather esp as ours has runflats. It just will not grip, which is great in sport plus to make you feel heroic but doesn't make any progress.

The s4 which is now on winter Nokians on the other hand, just will not lose traction. You really have to provoke and in Dynamic (with stiffened suspension and the diff set in dynamic too) it will drift with an oversteer slide which is quite rewarding, when you get it right. However it really needs steering set to comfort to weight up properly which means messing around with individual mode. the artificial weight of dynamic doesn't feel great. 

Golf is a good choice, unfortunately my gen 7 is a GTD Company pays the bills on it so it's just my daily. However even for a diesel it's loaded with some natty gadgets loads of torque. The biggest nav screen I've ever had in a car too. The last petrol gti I owned was a mk2 many moons ago and I still love a gti even today. If paying my own money I would still have a gti over an R any day.

I hated my E46 M3 with a passion, nice spec, carbon black manual. Unforunately it was always going wrong. The E46 330ci I had before it was a delight to own.

My pedal box came loose on my e46 which wasn't pleasant! That said I've had reliability issues with every bmw I've owned.

The only thing that went wrong on the 330ci was a split expansion tank. Maybe I was lucky with that one The M was a nightmare. I bought a manual to avoid the smg issues thinking I was being smart, alas it was a money pit, from vanos rebuild through to chocolate brakes and boot floor reinforcement it was sh**!

I know polishing and protection isnt top of everyones list but look at the results. Picked it up today after it spent 3 days being polished and protected. https://www.facebook...626529270763290 Highly recommended. Its been protected with paint protection film on bumper, half bonnet etc and then ceramic coated on rest of car.
