Yep, there's lots of different ways to crack an egg. All work to some degree, some better than others.

My mods are not particularly special or out of the ordinary. They are firstly functional and secondly look right to my eye. If people don't like my ideas then that's absolutely no problem. I'm sure they will do something different.

My car is track only, it can NEVER go on a road as it is a CAT B. I really don't know why, but it is. If I was to own any road car, it would have ZERO mods and it would be purely factory standard.

I have a chance now to carry out changes prior to a full respray, which is planned this year, hence the flurry of activity now.

I also own a number of cars, all of which tend to use a similar method of side scoops to bring in cold air into the mid engine layout. So all I have done is to replicate that on the VX.

P.S. the additional sill scoop in your photo is way too low & small for the amount of air I need.

Steal away...it's just an idea for those out there who want to improve on it.

I'm genuinely amazed at how deep the VX doors are. There's plenty of scope for deeper scoops. Also plenty of space behind the door pillar. At least you know your windows & all other parts are unaffected!

....when I took my doors off, I did like the look with no doors & roof!!!! Perhaps just keep the side protection bar....Atoms are pretty open? I wonder if track day organisers would allow it? Lots of weight savings, glass, wing mirrors etc etc x2!!! Lol

Iirc winstar did some flow calculations and found the scoops very inefficient, it wasn’t that they weren’t big enough but the air just wasn’t really getting to them.

I’m guessing the airflow is detaching round the front wheels and arch, I’m wondering if canards could be used on the front corner to energise the airflow by creating a vortex which should help it stay attached to the side of the car. This should increase the volume of air actually getting to the scoop.

This of course could all be bollocks and with any luck winstar will be along to show me how wrong I am

Also have you thought of flaring the rear of the front wheel arch and putting a vent in it. Not only would it vent the high pressure from the wheel space but that too would be directed directly to the scoops.

You could well be right, it was some time ago and I’ve had a few drinking sessions with Joe since so the memory ain’t what it used to be

Even though I honestly have not checked to see what people have done in the past, my solution was born out of the need to produce a simple effective solution that looked like a factory design detail. It would have been easy to graft on a roof scoop or snorkel? Lol.

That said, rarely does someone come out with a brand new idea. I have not! But, this solution is relatively cheap, easy to modify and functional plus I think it suits the car.

Ok, well I'm not going to stick pieces of string all over the side scoops. It's probably easier to hang joe out & see what it does to his hair!

Ok Ive completed both sides scoops & doors or should I say all my dremmel work is done.

Dave, I did consider fitting ford S-max style vents. I don't think the wheel arches are wide enough though. I guess the dreaded cut out & mesh could be done? But I don't really want to decimate my car too much. Bugger, perhaps a roof scoop would have been easier.

In reality, my expectations are relatively low, my car temps are not off the scale, so any improvements will be a bonus. That said, half the problem is getting rid of the hot air from the engine & reducing the exhaust & manifold heat soak.


I will keep posting photos as long as one person thinks it's useful. I'll add some tonight?

Its hard to see the effect with the black doors. 

 

Good points:

 

This variation tapers the entire door below the swage line and Looks less fussy.

 

No cables, pipes come anywhere near the area being modified.

 

Most of the high-density foam is retained in the main pillar.

 

There is plenty of space behind the door to make the opening 60mm wider by removing more foam.

 

I will be making the flat top of the sill curve upwards behind the door to give a canard effect & to sweep the air up & into the engine bay.  Possibly having a nacca style pipe take off like this to allow air to be taken to my gearbox/sc etc

 

 

Photos with & without CF side pod. I think a custom one with mesh grills may look better.

 

The handle to open the door on the underside of the lock will work beautifully & be hidden from sight. The old recess will be rotated through 90 degrees to locate your fingers in.

 

The lock protection plate inside the door had to be cut down, but it is retained & will continue to do it's job.

 

This conversion is purely cosmetic & only alters the fibreglass sills & door. No brackets or metal cutting is involved.

Ive been thinking of colour schemes....

 

I may go for Audi Nardo Grey main colour with Viper green side scoops, roof & coupe back & matt black wheels. What do you think?
