So I finally got some time to clean the filthy windows of my new car, and discovered that there are 2 patches of inside window I can't clean due to a pair of black thingies that's attached to the roll bar - how do I get behind those two? Cheers!

Take them off. It also provides a couple of more inches of leg room at the same time.

Rear thingies are velcrod on.

Oops. What are they for, anyway? Cheers!

Some say that in an accident you will die horribly without them.

cleaning windscreen also a bit of a pain too , just wait until you try to open the front bonnet

If they're velcro'd on, they won't be much use in an accident! Have opened the bonnet a number of times, no issues (yet...). While we're on this subject, what exactly is the issue that a number of people have and how do I fix this? Cheers!

Underneath the padding are some steel spoons welded on your rollbar.
The rear padding is velcro'd on. When you remove that you see 3 bolts that can remove the front side padding.
With both gone, you only see the metal spoons.
Some remove it to give aftermarket seats a bit more space to go backwards.

Ooh that makes sense now. Thanks. Do they just come off, or do I have to pull downwards, or there's a special way to do it hopefully not involving sacrifice of my firstborn?
If I bothered to read your message properly, I'd have seen you've already told me how to do it.
