Timing Belt And Water Pump Replacement

Here’s the thing. Just bought a VXT which has a slightly checkered service history. Foot invoice for water pump and Cam belt replacement 4 years ago, but since then the car has only done 2000 miles. I know the gurus say that these should be changed every 4 years but I assume that also takes into account “normal” mileage.

So I am minded to leave this change till I have put some sensible miles on the clock - and saved up the 500 quid or so to pay for it

Thoughts anyone?

just get it done if your worried, its an easy job if you just take your time.. 

i can do genuine GM belt kits inc water pump for £120 Delivered. 

Personally I think the OEM cam belts are pretty sturdy and I've never seen any bad wear on mine. Even with double springs to tug it, it has always seemed fine. Having said that I installed it myself and use the metal pulleys, as wear on the belt can come when the plastic ones crack, which in turn can cause fraying on the belt.The other "gotcha" is the belt tensioner siezing.

At a guess, leaving it another 6 months to save your money up will be very unlikely to see a failure in all probability.

To add, my Focus TDCI is on a 10 year old cam belt, my previous diesel car also lasted fine on a 12 years on a belt, so I have some faith in them!!

Mine had gone 5 years before I checked what was needed at its next service and realised the previous owner hadn't done it
