Supercharger "rattle"

I thought my chains were getting a little rattly so I popped by to see Gavin at Unit 4 to see what he thought. 

He said that he thought the noise was coming from the SC not the chains. 

I've not heard of anyone having this issue before - is it a known problem and what could the cause be?

I had an R53 Mini that it sounded like the engine had a bag of marbles rattling around in it and it ended up being the SC had ran dry of oil (common problem on the M45)

I ended up listening to it through a screwdriver to work out what it was.

How about the damper spring in the coupler. These are a known failure on the M62.

It's more a coupler disc (from plastic) that gives a supercharger rattle when worn. A cheap piece, but first check without drive belt if your noise is gone. (could also be the alternator...)

Coupler definitely prime suspect. Symptoms and noise match the descriptions.

Thanks Matt - I'd fit an OEM if I could find one, but Joe reckons the pattern ones without the spring will be fine   

Is there a way to check / top up the oil in the SC?

I feel I should hand in my keys after asking that!
