I have knocking noise when doing anything but braking; I tap the brakes and it goes away but quickly returnes.
It’s been there for the year I’ve owned it and it’s now on its 2nd set of pads and still there so my thinking it was the brakes is out.
Next port of call CV joints?
Are these common and what can I look for with the wheels up in the air?
Do they just need repacking or replacing, if so where to buy them from or will finding a good used complete set of driveshafts be a better option?

The pads should be so close to the disk, that there is hardly room for a wobble/rattle.
So start with removing the pads, and inspect them. Are they worn even?

Can rattle side to side so you add buffers on the edges of the inside of the calipers (4 small strips).
As smiley said, if it is rattling between the piston(s) / disk, it would be sticky piston and/or poorly worn pads, so check the pistons retract and push out smoothly and check condition of pads.

As a quick test for the buffers drive forward and brake then go into reverse and brake. if you get a fairly loud tap noise when braking in reverse then it only has buffers on the top of the caliper and not the bottom.
Mine was resolved by putting buffers on the bottom.
