Turbo Removal

Hey everyone..

Tried to do a wee search but not much luck.. found one thread but pictures aren’t there anymore.

I have a blown manifold gasket on the turbo I reckon.. right underneath the manifold. Seems to start to puff smoke a little when it’s giving a little tickle with the throttle. Looking to change this and wondering what’s the best way to attack it?

Can it be done with engine and clam still in place? I presumed it could but just be quite tricky and time consuming due to the space.

Any tips or tricks ?

are there sooty marks around one of the ports?

 

yes , turbo swap out without removing clam , just undertray.

 

need a large socket to get the oil drain banjo bolt off , you are probably okay to reuse the copper seals.

 

but while you are undoing the turbo oil supply hard pipe compression fitting , replace it with the Z20LEH one that has two support brackets as the originals do fail

Havnt had a good chance to get right under car. Took undertray off last night. Oil return does look quite “oily” I am not sure if that is coming from above or the bolt itself.

When I give it a little throttle it seems to start smoking ever soo slightly so am thinking more a manifold gasket blow or worse case scenario manifold is cracked.

Will get a right good look under there tonight.

No worries if I am removing I will purchase new gasket and bolt kit just for peice of mind.

if its just manifold gasket , get the kit as the set includes a few others

oil leaks ,

 

camcover gasket , often leaks in the corner and drips down on to cyl 4 exhaust and pools there

 

crankcase vent rubber 90 degree host to camcover breather , often looks okay , but rotten underneath and has an oily mist

Had a right good look under car last night.. it is defo an exhaust gas leak for sure! Smells ‘fuelly’ when hitting the throttle.

Once I managed to get all the heat shields off it looks like it’s coming from the core of the turbo. Water pipe on the rear of the turbo is very very sooty.. hard to tell though as space is criminal in there haha!

Cam cover gasket is weeping a little bit as well and oil return from turbo is covered in oil.

So looks like turbo is coming off and get it everything in there fully refreshed. Send turbo away for an overhaul or buy new one.
