So I go to attempt to remove the crank bolt (The one that holds the toothed pulley to the crankshaft) - My thinking was to put the vehicle in gear, chock the wheels and away we go. On attempting to loosen the bolt i am finding that the whole lot is turning i.e the toothed pulley cambelt etc - Should this be possible - I presume the whole engine is turning !but how can this be without the wheels turning. i only turned approx 20 degreess and it needed fairly minimal effort (1 hand on ratchet !!) but could i have done any damage - Any advice would be greatly appreciated

You are taking up the slack in your whole drive train as well as the belt.
You won't have caused any damage.

Phew thats a bit of a relief - was worried about the fact that im obviously turning it backwards (Anticlockwise) if i carry on turning will the slack be taken up and should it stop moving and allow the nut to be loosened - Thanks for your reply

Yeah, aslong as your cambelt isn't slack then it won't jump any teeth. Use a high gear to help with the car not moving although handbrake on and chocked it should be ok.
The hard part is having enough room with the bar to undo it, I can't remember how tight those are on a turbo.
Another way is to remover the starter and put something in to hold the flywheel.
Another way is sump off and block of wood to stop a rod moving.
It's all easier with air tools though

Thanks - Id already figured out the "high gear" bit but was just surprised when the pulley started to turn -I Thought it would be rock solid and didnt realise that there was this amount of slack in the system !! -Yes cambelt is brand new and tight so should be fine but ill check the markings line up when its all done -Thanks again for the advice as always it is very much appreciated

I had car in fifth gear and handbrake on. It takes a lot of force to loosen it, as long as the drive shafts done move you are fine

Update - May help some one in the future
Simple tool knocked up to hold the crank in place while undoing the nut - 500mm strip of mild steel, couple of holes drilled and a small cutout to clear the crank bolt. slight bend to clear the lower wishbone - Worked a treat had the crank bolt out in about 10 seconds !!!!

I'm amazed that didn't slice through the oil filter!!
Why - Bolts undo anti clockwise !!!! + i was holding the other end of my homemade tool i.e only the bolt was turning not the tool/crank pulley !! note pic does not show my socket and ratchet on the bolt !!!
