Trying to test timing tonight (ITBs with external trigger wheel), as engine will only just start and runs very rough before stalling. Using timing light to do it.

I ran a ht lead from the coil pack to number 1 cylinder - leaving the others disconnected as the coil pack was off.

Only got a flash every couple of seconds when cranking, and was the same in each cylinder. When I stopped cranking I got a number of flashes as I would expect normally for a really short time.

So, am I getting a poor quality spark from the ecu or is it a poor connection to the timing gun? Running the Gun off an old car battery that’s not the best, but giving well over 12v.

Also noticed the relays clicking like mad after cranking, but once the coil pack was fitted back properly thus went away...

Any thoughts?

you need to use spark leads on all four cylinders so that the engine runs, you can remove all the plugs and try and use one lead, but I found it was not very reliable - not enough engine speed
