I have a crack in the exhaust manifold and note that the turbo is part of that casting. What is the general opinion about replacements? Does the VXR220 turbo fit directly on, does the rest of the exhaust system match and is there an advantage to doing so?

Yes, yes and yes. The majority or replacements sold are the VXR turbo, something different in the blades, bolts straight up.

you can just unbolt 4 retaining clips and fit another manifold

Thank you for the responses. I was told that the manifold itself was part of the casting and that I had to change the whole assembly??

The manifold is the casting. The turbo body is also cast, but as Sizeten states, is a separate component from the manifold.
