Hi everyone :)

I recently purchased an loved but little used NA VX from a couple of .org members Nat and MandarinVX here is the old project thread http://www.vx220.org...my-new-project/

They are lovely people who met through the club who cherished the car until life got in the way.

It came without an MOT but with with its fair share of mods and a loads of spares including an SC and Manifold so My plan is:

- Recommission

- MOT

- Enjoy

- SC

The plan is to daily drive year round when the weather permits, learn and meet some nice people :)

Activity so far

- trailer home during the floods (no photo sorry, phone battery ran out)

- buy and connect a cheap OBD reader (I am used to old landrovers so had not used one before!)

- fix misfire through replacement of plugs (went for the ones with three terminals) then replacement coil pack (Euro car parts came in great with the discount - circa £50 (how do you stop these from getting wet?

- replaced perished tyres (toyo t1r from demon tweaks - delivered in under 24hrs)

Next actions

- Find a replacement EGR cheater - the one on it is toast - where on earth can I buy a replacement?

- Sort the cam timing error code, reading on here it could be a connection or the sensor?

- Fix the heater, its blowing fuses

- Take for an MOT

I am starting to think ahead to the SC setup, It already has some engine mods:

- Piper exhaust system

- Ported head

- GM motorsports Double valve springs

- GM motorsports oversized valves

- Stage 1 cams

- Eagle con rods

With this lot in mind what power should I be aiming for? If i got the right injectors, a charge cooler under the radiator and the OBD tuner software could I go over 250? what else would I need? I presume the pistons would be the limiting factor?

Ryan.

Rods go around 275, and pistons go around 300.

An M62 can get you around 300.

You can get 250 on a stock engine (stop at around 260), so most of your mods are for going near 300.
So if you do decide to open her up, include the pistons.

After that you could even go bonkers to 400 with a harrop 1320.

The liners are next at 400 isch max.

I have not done the 300 route myself so wait for other imput, but as listed above small pully, rods and pistons.
Ported head helps, and sharper cams., but i have no exact list on what is needed, versus nice to have.

Should it be trackday proof, or just to give it the beans once in a while?

I would have to agree, Tullett are very well made and have been tested and proven on so many cars now..

It already has the pipper exhaust, is it worth switching to the tullet?

I an looking for reliability over out right power, the rods are done but not the pistons so should I be aiming for 280-290ish?

I had a quick look at the bits for the SC that came with the car.
-charger
-manifold
-throttle body
-injectors

I believe the injectors are of a turbo, are they in up to it or should I look for something better? Also is this the right size pulley on the charger?

Nb are their any recomend inks or threads that could cut my learning curve?

Welcome to the forum! There are loads of us around in Warwickshire although I've moved to Worcestershire now. Where abouts exactly are you? I've gone through the SC process so happy to be a second set of hands if needed.

One thing to keep an eye on is that aftermarket coil packs for these engines are quite hit-and-miss, especially the 'virtual' cam sensor function done with compression sense sometimes simply does not work with these.

It can be a good option to keep your eyes open for used OEM ones from a breaker, Ebay, etc. from an Astra, Vectra or various other cars that ran the Z22SE (some Alfa's)

For the SC upgrade these days most people go with the 'Dutch' option to turn the OEM ECU into a programmable one: http://www.obdtuner.com/

Bye, Arno.

How is Adam? Haven't seen him in years. Used to go to the odd VX meet at the Dog House pub in Abingdon along with the Lotus owners back in the day..

Thanks Arno,

The reason I went for a coil pack from euro car parts is the confidence that its genuine, it seems to be working well but if I have any issues I'll find a genuine one :)
