Sorn And Insurance

Hi All,

I normally tax and insure my VXT all year round.  However, it is currently sat in MMG workshop with valve stem seals being replaced (plus other stuff).  With the lockdown in place, it's not going anywhere soon.

So was thinking of saving some money by SORNing it.  But when I look around the internet, it would appear that I would also have to cancel my insurance?

Input/Advise would be appreciated.

but there's conflicting information, so was looking for what other vx owners experience is, as I know many SORN their vehicles over the winter.

It’s not conflicting, that’s an FAQ about cancelling insurance. 
 

No way would I be cancelling my insurance while my car was in someone else’s custody!

If SORN'ed you can cancel your insurance but you don't have to and, as others say, I wouldn't (certainly if not in your own garage..). A lot of insurance companies offer 'laid up' cover though, which is essentially just fire & theft cover..

If you SORN your vehicle you don't have to cancel your insurance, cover remains the same but obviously you can't drive it on the road as it's not taxed. It's the other way round that affects them both i.e. if you cancel the insurance then you need to SORN it as it will flag to the the DVLA that it's taxed to be driven on the road but you don't have insurance in place.

Some insurances are offering Laid-up cover - but not all of them have the facilities in place to do this so you'd need to check who you are with
