I am now completely paranoid about them haha.
Will splash out on a set soon but wanted to know, is there a way with the wheels in place of checking them? I can see them in there - should I be wiggling them? Knocking them? What?

The wiggle is only good for detecting play.
For actual wear and tear on the famous bolt at the hub, you will have to take it out.
Better safe then sorry. One second you are having fun, and the next you are driving into a ravine.

From what I've seen over the past few years are people putting a spanner on them and moving the bar on the joints to ensure they're all free moving with no play. When I first got mine people were seeing boot failures resulting in the ball becoming stiff (ooeer) and then subsequent failure. More recently it seems to be flex / fatigue related cracking in the treads of the joints. The later one is more difficult to examine. You can X-ray of use penetrant dye testing but both are a little excessive. Just replace them periodically and treat them as a service item. I did this for a few years before buying spitfire links (FAR superior!).
£300 isn't bad for new toe links and a geo; in fact that's pretty good. Links are well north of £100 each and, if it's just the joints, they're north of £20 each. Add a geo on and it looks a good price.
Whatever you do, no option is fit and forget. Aftermarket ones should be inspected at least annually IMO. If you're tracking it I'd do a before and after check along with a nut and bolt check (yes, I'm paranoid).
