Personalised Plate Retention For Mother In Law

Wonder if anybody has done similar?

My father in law recently passed away and I need to put his personalised registration plate on retention in my mother in laws name.

I have all relevant forms and information to send to the DVLA, but I am unsure about filling in the new keeper details on the V5 (DVLA site says to do this).

Do I add my mother in laws details here (even though she doesn't drive—we will be selling the car)?

My concern is adding another 'owner' to the log book.

From memory, you can retain the number (which you'd do using the current V5 in your father-in-law's name) and then assign the reg to someone else (as if you'd sold it) which - if your mother-in-law doesn't drive - you'd be doing anyway? I.e. if you're selling the car and the plate there's no need to worry about changing the V5 at all..

I have completed the V371 form to keep a vehicle registration. For the time being I just want the retention certificate to be in my mother in law's name. It will more likely be assigned to another car within the family at a later date, but she wants to sell the car, but keep the rights to the plate.

DVLA have asked for copy of will, death certificate, V371 and the completed V5. Just unsure as to wether or not the new keeper section should be filled out in my mother in law's name or my late father in law—it's not particularly clear on the DVLA site. I am going to try calling them tomorrow.
