Which Suspension

Been a while since I've posted on here..

 

I've got my VX booked in for a much needed service next Friday and i am finally looking to replace the worn out Spax units that i fitted to the car back in 2006.

 

The main reason being because of the horrible rattle that they developed not long after a bought them, which has become unbearable. Also the adjuster knobs have become seized, which don't help.

 

I do a few trackdays a year, but don't have a huge budget so was going to order some of the gaz golds, but have just read about some failures on here, which has worried me. Does anyone know if all of these issues have now been resolved, or are people still getting failures?

 

Am i better just sticking with the Spax units and putting up with the horrible rattle, or the other possibility is do i just put the standard billies back on?

 

From what i remember, these didn't perform quite as well on track, but were quieter and a little more forgiving on the road, although last time i used them was 14 years ago.

 

Opinions please, i am not sure what to do. I need to order the gaz by Monday if i am going to get them to have them ready to fit by the garage the week after.

I have nitrons on mine, road/track comprise, been pleased with them on and off track, only do 1-2 track days a year though

The gaz golds did suffer from cracked bodies which the pro 2’s resolved, then there was a case of a piston rod snapping, gaz use the same piston rods as spax iirc so its not a “gaz” failure as such.

I recommend the gaz monos if you are on a budget, £1060 for a full set with your choice of spring rates, if you have more money to splash then the nitron ntr40’s are a great shock £1664 / £1765 for fast road / clubsport.

I got a set of Gaz Gold Adjustable - https://www.ebay.co....:g:OeEAAOSwqZJcb6Pd - last year and I like them a lot.

The build quality is there and the surface coatings are all intact (I try to avoid rain driving, but I do it). The spring's powder coating is still crack-free after a year.

I do not go on tracks and I love them on nice roads (and I have quite stiff tyres) and I am quite happy with them on the terrible, terrible roads near where I live.

In terms of absolutes i'll believe there are better dampers out there, but for me the cost/benefit is right and the other's better/£ ratio looks to be quite steep unless you're chasing lap times.

He built my Quantum’s and they have been great.

I would go Nitron, Quantum or Mono but more important than the brand is the setup and spring rates so just make sure you get them set up by someone who knows that they are doing.

Of course you are wrong! 46’s definitely aren’t the best for track use. 40’s are much, much better.

personally, quantum’s have been the best for me on track and I’ve had all fitted and used on track.

Nitron street series seem very good so far.
A good mate and lotus specialist just laughed when I said about the Gaz option.
Baring in mind he has worked with Elises’s and vx’s for many years now.
