Anodising - Anyone Interested In Forming A Big Batch?

I expect to have a Post Office card in my door when i get home. My flat is a right barsteward for having stuff delivered! Oh and thanks to Dunk for sorting it

Received all my stuff today and the whole lot was perfect. Thanks again Duncan mate for taking the time to sort this all out and the time to package, unscrew, refit, scratch letters, resend and keeps us updated on everything. If i ever meet up with at some point then il get you a few beers in

My fuel cap and surround just arrived and look good. Thanks for arranging this Dunk.

Just out of interest, the fuel cap appeared to be press fit on the plastic underneath, is it worth using some adhesive on this when refitting?

You're welcome. As for refitting the cap, I've just gone with the Nicol-approved thump it in method. No adhesive, no finesse. It's worked a treat.

I'm not quite the ham fisted monkey you make out Well placed tap with a screwdriver and a hammer will ease it into place

Fair point. . I didn't even use a hammer. Palm of the hand for added mechanical sensitivity & a folded soft cloth to protect the new surface.

Got mine and well chuffed. My thanks as well Dunk. However one question. I fcuked the heater knob inserts getting them out (too long in the oven!) luckily I have spare but how the sod did people get these out, tried putting woodscrew in and pulling that. Tried needle nosed pliers, tied gentle heat and all combinations of those. No joy! Any tips?

I just got a screw that fits the little tiny hole. Screw the screw in and then get a set of pilers on and pull it out.

Another Anodising Jedi Master trick courtesy of Nicol is to get a self-tapping screw which is a big enough diameter to get proper purchase on the plastic of the insert (through the circular hole, without being so big as being a risk of splitting it) and long enough to go right through, with extra shaft to spare.

All you do is screw it right down until the tip reaches the inner surface of the aluminium knob and then torque up the screw until it cracks the adhesive seal at the bottom and forces the plastic insert away from the knob. It only took a couple of cranks (maybe a quarter turn in total) after the screw tip hit metal for me to hear the adhesive give way.

After that it was a simple case of continuing to turn the screw until it had been forced apart enough o pull it out.

^^ Possibly too many references to "shafts," "screws," "holes," "tips," "cracks," "splitting," "knobs" and "pulling out." No? Just me then?

Put it in the freezer for a few hours then the glue will become brittle and pop out with the screw method.

I fitted the fuel filler yesterday and it looks great. I also bought the black bolts from fleaBay on the link on a previous page and they set it off nicely. They're high gloss but with the sapphire black of the bodywork, it looks good.

FYI if you are using black bolts which are anodised aluminium themselves, then grease the crap out of the threads. Otherwise the next time you come to undo them in a year or two they will be nicely seized into place. They aren't particularly load bearing so its all good to not tighten the hell out of em too, as doing so will make the material yield and potentially reveal the silver looking base metal
