Its possible your router has a different firmware revision because it has been modified for Sky, you could likely flash it to a standard dg834 firmware - but i wouldn't recommend it unless you know what you're doing. The lcp and chap bits in your logs are your router bringing up your broadband connection - we only have a snippet of the logs so cant tell for certain what has been happening, other than for a period of time it was unable to get a connection despite several retries. That could be a one off, or it could indicate that at times of no connection you are losing 'sync' on your line - i.e. the router is not able to negotiate a connection with the exchange due to e.g. noise on the line. Noise on the line could also be classed as someone using a phone without a filter. Its definitely worth checking out your internal cabling and filters. I would recommend locating the master socket, popping the faceplate off and plugging just the router+filter into the test socket behind the faceplate and seeing how it performs then. You can easily establish where the lack of connection lies - when you 'lose connection', if you can't browse to the net, but CAN browse to the routers configuration page, then its the internet connection that has dropped and not the ethernet connection to the router. If you miss it, take note of the time you lost connection and immediately look at the logs - if you have a lcp/chap call initiation at the time of your lack of connection, it means your adsl dropped. If you didn't, then its possible your usb ethernet adaptor is a bit flakey. If you can't get on the router at all at the time of no connection, then get yourself a pci ethernet card (5 or 6 quid?) and fit that to your pc. if the connection drop is that frequent, then get a mate round with a laptop - connect it with a wire, if they both lose connection, its unlikely its the pc's at fault. Loads of troubleshooting options there... see how you get on thumbsup

Looking at the log CHAP stands for Challange Handshake Protocol, this is your router connecting to Skys router. NTP is Network time protocol, this is your router updating it's internal clock with that of Netgears. The issue seems to be the LCP bit. A quick search on Google for

http://www.google.co...G=Google Search

gives loads of results in a similar topic. The general consensus is you need a new network adaptor.

I disagre, you dont need a new network adapter, the router will be dropping that connection regardless of what the pc and its network adapter is doing, this is a problem with the line and/or router :(

Latest update: I have just been listening to a live feed of the football for 45 mins. The feed stayed connected throughout (which I guess means that the connection is still there), but the internet stopped working after 10 mins as usual. Does that give any clues?

The connection probably still dropped out but the feed you were watching was probably bufferd on your pc ie a small ammount pre downloaded so it can cover the drops.

I have disconnected everything except one filter (new) with phone & router plugged into it, so think that is OK.

Everything I have says that the model you posted before is what I've got, but none of the firmware I've downloaded is compatible. Is it worth trying to re-install it from the CD that came with it?

Thanks for your continued help.

Hmmmm, it must say the model somewhere, on the manual, box, cd, bottom/front of the router or the web interface?

It does say the model on both the sheet that came with the router, & also on the web interface....DG834GT...as above, but the Netgear website doesn't list my firmware version, & the firmware I've downloaded for the DG834GT aren't compatible with my 'device'. I'm confused. Could it be a version of the above model that has been specially adapted for Sky?

I just re-loaded the firmware from the CD, but it has made no difference.

Hmm looks like sky use thier own custom firmware which is know to be buggy, you can flash it with netgear firmware:

http://www.skyuser.c...y-password.html

I would wait for your new one to turn up then its worth giving it a go so you have a spare in case you fook it :)

The Sky Firmware is restrictive and un-reliable, so if your router is the Sky branded one you may wish to flash it to either UberGT or the Official firmware

Thanks. I'll wait for the new one to arrive then give it a try. at least if I've got a spare one, I've got nothing to lose.

Was what you were listening to really a live feed? If it was, i doubt even the finest pc could have buffered itself 35 minutes into the future? My guess is DNS is failing, or, you have something nasty lurking on your pc that may be maxing out the routers routing/connections table. Bittorrent, limewire, gnutella - or any other filesharing app that spews thousands of connections out. The router can only handle so many connections, and filesharing apps tend to keep their connections open, meaning the router cannot open any new ones. If the football feed was already open, it could continue to run. Your pc relies on DNS servers to turn a web address from easy to remember name, to IP addresses that it uses to actually communicate. If it stops being able to do this, then as far as you can see the net is down - But if you were to say browse to google.co.uk using its IP address it would work. Or, if it had already resolved the football feed URL from name to number, it could also continue to run. you could try getting the dns server ip addresses from your ISP (google might give you the answer) and manually specifying them on the network settings of your ethernet adapter Are you running vista?

The problem seems to be cured...at least for now. I went through the computer and deleted anything that was no longer used/needed. I haven't installed anything recently, so I'm not sure what was doing it, or even if it was a coincidence, but I'm not complaining. Thanks for all your help and suggestions with this everyone, it's been much appreciated.
