Thought you might like to see this.

Body scanners

The Pilot community are up in arms about this not only on the privacy issue but also on the radiation risks involved. it suggested in fact you get 10 times more dosage than they say. I nearly glow in the dark as it is without absorbing more.

more technical links on request

I know very little about these and if the radiation issue is correct then I would have a problem with these. On a privacy/violation front I don't have any problems, I have nothing to hide and if it stops 1 plane being hijacked/blown up etc then they are fine by me.

Im not too fussed about these. But if I had kids I would be concerned. Or are these things just for adults to go through?

Kids go through these as well and it's the radiation which is the concern for me If you refuse the so called "pat down" is EXTREMELY intrusive.

I think I've been through the ones in Manc dosen't bother me as I only fly once in a blue moon. However as an ex-nuclear engineer it does make me wonder about the long term exposure of frequent flyers. I'll ask the Mrs she's more up on dosing and who regulates it.

May be time that you started wearing a dosimiter?

Hmm. I don't like the sound of the radiation dose. Nigel and I are both frequent flyers and have been through the MAN ones quite a few times.

America frightens me the more I go there. The airport security personnel are power hungry thugs, by and large. I'd rather get my kit off than get a whack of radiation from a body scanner any day, assuming it is as near as they, the TSA, (or others) claim. I'd be interested to know what they'd say to someone wearing a Geiger counter should they be selected for a scan. Alarming link

Agree, most airport staff have had a sense of humour bypass but the Americans are in a different league.

All have watched a bit too much 24 or GI Joe for my liking.

dont think the radiation dose is anything to worry about. these machines are quoted to give a dose of 0.1 micro Sievert. (the annual UK average from background radiation is 2.6 Milli sieverts), even if they are a factor of 20 out its still only 4 micro sieverts which is still less than one days worth of background. for someone working in a radioactive area their annual dose limit is 20 milli sieverts which means you will have to be scanned 5000 times (worst case) to reach this limit http://fakeapoc.blog...-radiation.html http://www.hse.gov.u...ionising/doses/

Next time I fly I will line my underpants with aluminium foil. I might even create a 'cricket box' type cup lined with lead.

Technical considerations - The recent discovery of bombs in printer cartridges shows body scanners aren't cure-all to saving us...also, the scanners won't pick up anything in a body cavity - if you're gonna blow yourself up, you're not going to be averse to implanting something in your abdomen in advance of your flight. Civil liberties considerations - "You've nothing to fear if you've nothing to hide" is a weak argument. I shouldn't be treated as a suspect unless there are good grounds for specific suspicion. That statement could be responsible for us sleepwalking into a state where we're all treated as guilty - having to submit to intrusive and upsetting levels of scruting, supported by no evidence of wahtsoever. How about cameras in all opur homes, routine monitoring of email, internet use, phone tapping and trcking of your movements in your car or on foot? Why not? If you've nothing to hide it should be ok, right? BTW - The TSA adverstise for their staff on pizza boxes in the US....Just in case you want to know what robust checks and measures are in place to protect your dignity! As an aside on safety vs risk - http://www.lewrockwe...n-kill-you.html

Don't forget the workers! Nick They won't bring these into staff check ins so you should be fine, I know which check ins pilots use in t4,t3,t1 and they will not bring them into use there. It will be too dangerous I would end up going through them 3/4 times a night!
