Wasn't near Temple in London was it? I just saw one being unloaded from a van but this was white rather than yellow... I'd definitely swop !!

Maybe it was so quick it made it from there to London in record time. No wonder the yellow paint stripped off... would definitely swop for that ;)

I really doubt if it were a real one tbh. However the replicas are 'kin fantastic and can fetch close to £150k. I run Club Lotus Sussex area and we've got a talk by the Chairman of the GT40 owners club coming up. He used to have a replica but he's now sold it and is involved in reproducing an original from original parts albeit not from the same car. He's going to bring along some of the more manageable parts that he has acquired so far to his talk. I said I would organise security in which case.

The only real GT40 iv seen is when we went to pickup a car for a customer from classic car storage, my jaw nearly hit the floor when i walked in to the warehouse. There was about 50 cars in the building we was in and there was another 2 buildings, once we had the car on the trailer he showed us round the cars that were there and said the Gulf GT40 was an original with le mans history and worth around a million and sitting next to it was an identicial spare Gulf body/chassis also with history that he said was for sale for half a million. I had never seen 80% of the stuff in there before, things like a Zagato bodied Aston DB7. This was about 5 years ago now and although it was nice to see, its a shame all these nice cars are sitting around in storage places. Sam.

I agree and disagree in equal measure... There are some cars that need to be preserved otherwise the only people that could now afford them would be footballers and can you honestly believe that they would look after them?

It would be a disaster to the legacy of some great cars, the Zagato bodied Aston is on the list of cars I have to see before I die!

I've seen a genuine GT40 out on the road about four years ago near Bishops Stortford. I almost crashed whilst trying to watch it in my rearview mirror.

I would be very interested to know how you could tell it was a genuine GT40 from looking in your rear view. The only way I've been able to tell from the outside is by looking at the tax disk

Well it drove past me....and I apologise if I'm wrong but at the time I assumed due to the registration/badges etc it was a genuine article. If it was a lookalikey then it was bloody good.

Rob, the replicas are brilliant too thumbsup Owners go to great lengths to make them look as authentic as possible. Just thought you had some secret way of telling the difference.

I was taken to Donnington most years when I was a kid to the Ferrari Owners Club 'testing' day. One year somebody brought along this weird looking silver thing (I was probably 9 or 10) which just sat in the pits all morning. I went to have a look at it at lunch time and just as I was walking away, this guy approached the car, opened the door (when your 9 it's well cool when the door opens and half the roof comes with it!) and jumps in. I remember him saying to me 'you might want to stand back a bit son', which I of course I ignored. Tick, tick, whir, gurgle and then BAM!!! I can still remember the strange mix of feeling terrified and intoxicated at the same time and that strange kind of crackling distortion in my ears as he blipped the throttle a few times. 7ltr Mk III. Happy days.
