Result today, went down to Goodwood and got a pax in a GT40. Unreal experience. The fella could drive too, couple of the V6 Exige guys had to move over. Incredible sound, i think my ears are still ringing. Also had to have my head crooked over at an angle cos that's the only way I'd fit in

I thought you might be interested in a Video that my friend has produced showing the restoration of his original GT40 and what he's done with it since it's been restored. He's been completely blind since he was 21 and so it's been a feat of endurance to source all the parts and get it all put together.

Yes, absolutely fantastic bits of tackle!  We looked after one of these when I worked for Lynx Engineering, had several rides in it, always impressive and the exhaust noise with the flat plane crank and crossover exhaust was just something else, phenomenal.  Also had a trip round Goodwood in a Saphir 7 litre (Mk4 ?) toolroom copy and that was actually quite worrying because the thing had so much torque that you could hear the structure creaking when the throttle was opened!  Amazing cars.

Chassis (and any other heavy bits) were often designed/built to last a short while back then, not surprised it groaned after 30+ years or whatever!

Good to see this thread revived, will always lust after these.

Though I commented before I don't think I mentioned seeing the might of one of these at Donington first hand.  It was an RS Owner's Club day oddly enough, they were doing passenger rides in a couple of stupidly tuned up Escort Cossies as a promotion ~500bhp if I remember rightly.

Anyways, as we were bombing round at what I thought was a pretty scary pace I noted the driver coming away from the racing line. A second later this impossibly low car came past us like we'd hit the brakes, I distinctly remember not only hearing but feeling that GT40 engine noise vibrating through the door handle that I was clutching onto.  Even though our driver was still "on it" we'd lost sight of it within a couple of corners.

Makes me wonder what the spec of it was, this ancient old dinosaur that had just handed a new and tuned Cossie it's arse on a plate.

Quite so, but this was a brand new toolroom copy on it's first trip to a circuit!  The original car we looked after was indeed around 25 years old and less powerful too but made no worrying noises at all.  I remember that one job we had to do on that car every 5 or 6 years was to take the fuel tanks out of the sill pontoons, clean and dry everything out and replace, the original bag tanks had long gone, replaced by aluminium tanks wrapped in foam sheet, but there was always a condensation problem inside the pontoons that needed watching. 

I'm visiting my friend in March and he's said I can drive it. Only on the roads mind. Agreed value £3.5m.

Couldn't help noticing that the car is for sale in Car and Classic Chris. Why don't you buy it and give us all a go in it
