Do you drive the vx everyday? Been thinking I really ought to clean my ITG fitted last May, but I only drive it at w'ends and not that much during the winter. Definately going to do it soon though.

Yes, I drive it everyday.....but its a small commute

ive done about 5k since it was last cleaned. And im truly shocked.

I repeated the cleaning excercise 5 times before i was happy there wasnt crap coming out...interestingly the last couple resulted in a fair amount of what looks like sand...im presuming residue from grit although I would have though that would have been first out?

anyway, my advice is to clean foam filters after the gritters have gone....cant do any harm for a few quid cleaning kit and an hours work thumbsup

To put this into context....

Imagine having a good game of ruggers on a sunday morning

and you are too gay to hit the showers with the rest

You go home and soak in a nice hot bath

The crap left after you get out of your tub is what came out of my viper

I joke not :(

:beat: :beat: :beat: :beat: :beat: :beat: Im amazed at the naievety of some of you guys! People are very quick to condemn the airbox mod (as it lets 2 many particles in!) and here you are running closed system forced air induction systems!  Think about it, dirt goes in and has nowhere to escape, constantly moving about untill particles break down and are drawn into the intake tract etc! :beat: :beat: :beat: If I had one of these I would be cleaning it once a month! thumbsup You ask someone in the know how poor the filtration is on aftermarket filters! :( I clean and re-oil my standard induction kit every 2.5k! :) Reckon we could see some premature engine wear creeping in at some point! :(

Ok, I got the K&N cleaner kit cos thats all i could find.

K&N are cotton gauze filters hence the cleaning/treatment kits are made for cotton filters!

Not foam as fitted in your viper! thumbsup

Foam filters use a high tack oil to trap dirt as foam is less efficient when it comes to filtration! thumbsup

I've done about 5k since it was last cleaned. And I'm truly shocked.

I put my original airbox and filter back in just so that it gets changed as part of my regular service. I miss the noise but I like not having to keep taking the K&N in and out to clean it all the time and worrying about if the cleaning is effecting it's filtration ability.

This link has been doing the rounds on the various Jap tuning forums for a while now. Have a look at how much crap the HKS and Blitz let through!

I'd guess the K&N doesn't need cleaning as often as the air flows from ouside to inside the cone as opposed to the Viper which flows from inside to outside. The K&N can't really trap stuff whereas the Piper (& ITG, etc) acts like a big cup to catch all the crap.

Remember cleaning mine after about 10k and it was full o'shite.

Note to self before VX hits the road again - remove Viper and clean  Anyone got a guide on cleaning these beasties? Do you just rinse thru with water from the inlet side, leave to dry then spray some of that "dirt retention" stuff on? I got a tin of that with a foam panel filter I bought from Courtenay once.

You re-oil the K&N when its wet then let it dry naturally, takes a least a full day to dry tho.

Amusing how quickly we've decended into the filtration argument though - we could start the same thread about cheap oil, supermarket fuel etc etc etc.

EDIT : Should say my point about filtration is that as and when Courtenays, TMS, AMD etc stop putting Vipers, K&Ns, ITGs etc onto their cars is the day I'll think about taking mine off. Not until then. thumbsup Oh and another thing, a Noble has K&N as standard as do a number of chevy V8 cars.

My Viper turned the water this colour when I cleaned it last weekend... and there was a fair amount of grit and sh*t at the bottom of the pail.

Si,

I have the spray too "Dirt Retention Additive" they call it.

I just used fairy liquid, massaged it into the foam. You cant take the element out so it's a bit of a pain. Then you rinse it out from the clean side. I found this: http://www.pipercros...ect.com/faq.asp thumbsup

It took like 2 days to dry in the airing cupboard... You cant apply direct heat as it could shrink the foam!!

I then lightly sprayed the air feed side with the oil stuff...
