nutter! Second link doesn't work - but I'm guessing it's to a small block V8 with NOS? On a more sensible note a grand seems quite steep for the 156.

Sounds good thumbsup Can't see the engine link but isn't the engine based on the same block as the 2,2 NA? If you're lucky with the engine damage you should just be able to swap blocks and keep the original head, ECU and direct injection stuff :) Might be interesting using the 2.2L's stroke in what was meant to be a 2L, but I doubt it would be that big a problem. You could always look at the Saab block too :tt: Just a shame its an Alfa :gayfight:

putting a complete new engine in. Too unsure about the state of the top end in an engine where the bottom end is clearly fooked.

Keep us updated - I'm thinking along the same lines. Have £1500 to spend on sensible car but want something decent, modern, fast that doesnt eat fuel.....can you send another link to engine?

should all come in at under a grand. although i will do the timming belt on the new engine 80 quid (inc tensioner) might give it a new clutch too (160 quid) the alfa forums make for interesting reading could all end in tears though.

seems to me that you might need some alfa romeo engine locking tools to fit the cambelt etc. Just as well I work for a company that sell them... you popping by this afternoon to pick up these catalogues then :poke: :poke: :P

where did you source the engine from? This looks like a great way of getting mitts on decent car for few pennies! You doing the work yourself?

Yep doing all the work myself.

The engine comes from a salvage yard, condition is still un-known, but it can't be that bad, and i'll just rebuild it if it is. The one the car has got has a great big hole in the side of the block.

The engine arrives tomorrow

I'm picking up (literally) the car on sat.

I'm rather excited by it all.

There are a few issues so far:
-The engine is basicly made of cheese, shredding cam belts is a past time, therefore they will be replaced at the enormous cost (i feel) of £140. The engine lovely though it is, has variable valve timming and the high pressure oil fed variators aren't good for much more than 30-50k miles, so i'll put a new one of them in at a nice £55. Then you might as well put a new water pump while you're there at a cost of £23. A few tools are required too tottalling £23 too. So before the engine is even in the car its cost a fair bit in maintenance. That said, so long the big end are good the the hardest part done and should, touch, wood make a reliable alfa...

i'm hoping it will complement the vx - and it should be more powerfull.

well, got the car sat. An imense thanks to my friend David, for driving to wolverhampton from kent and back in a day. He was rather suprised to see better fuel economy than he usually gets! we averaged around 20mpg for the whole journey which i think is mighty impressive.

Alfa looks great. Quite a few stone chips on the front with a few scratches around the rest of the body. It really needs a good clean. The interior is stunning, virtually un-marked. Grey leather seats. Bose stereo upgrade. Clarion std fit CD player. climate. everything electric.

New (secondhand) engine arrived Friday.

now need to purchase a hoist because it flapping heavy.

Great fun!

Well, wiring loom is all disconnected. TBs are different between the engines which is a bit of bother, so is the exhaust manifold. but once the engine is empied of oil and water, engine mount off its ready to come out. Stereo is amazing. Oh and i've renamed this as the italian shed section :D

Can I post about my Shitty Fiat Punto in here then? It's still sat in my works car park with a fcuked clutch, I can't decide whether to recover it home and spend most of my christmas hols fixing it or just, begrudgingly, pay a garage to do.
