just to let you guys know, they are doing a group buy over at z22se.co.uk on a custom piper 4-1 manifold.

price is £299 based on 10 people commiting to the group buy, im just double checking that the astra/vectra manifold is the same so it will be a straight swap.. im pretty much sure it is tho.

vocky did mention that we could see gains of 'upto' 10bhp but obviously its engine dependant.

looks like a nice cheap manifold really :)

here is the link.

im trying to figure that out atm..

if anyone has a TIS manual for the 2.2 astra we can check part numbers, but as far as im aware they are the same, vocky said they are all the same tho.

scuba, its just the manifold so it will join back onto your precat pipe, so yes it will still fit it. (im in the same boat)

i beleive it is the same part, i got '24438033' from the vx cd and i foudn this on vectra sport.

Would the clam need to come off to fit it?

Would the clam need to come off to fit it?

apparently no.. but i tried to get it off not too long ago and although it was evry loose i couldnt see a way of getting it out. BUT i spent all of 5 mins messing as it started to rain..

vocky said its possible, so im sure it is.

edit:

jsut so nobody gets the wrong idea, im talking about removing the manifold, not fitting the new one, as the tech boys below said its impossible the see until a new one is made.

Just a note of caution but I wouldn't count on a manifold designed around the Vectra/Astra fitting. Yes, the relative start and end points (flange positions) of the manifold appear to be common across all of the Z22SE cars but, the key bit will be how Piper route the 4 pipes and how far out from the head flange the pipes come before bending down. I'm guessing they may well have more space available to play around with in the engine bay of a Vectra or an Astra, than we have available between the cylinder head and the boot bulkhead. Piper would probably need to have a VX available as well, to make sure that any complicated routing/bends don't foul the bulkhead or get too close with resulting heat issues. Both MartinS and I have the TMS 4-1 manifold and have had to upgrade our bulkhead heatshields to try and protect our bulkheads from the increased heat of the stainless tubular manifolds. It shouldn't be a show stopper for Piper but they really do need to check with an example of a VX and not assume that just because it fits the Vectra, it'll fit a VX. I think it's possible to remove/replace the standard manifold with the clam on but there was no chance of fitting the TMS 4-1 manifold without removing the clam as it's such a different shape and physically, a fair bit bigger. Kind of impossible to tell how the Piper will fit until there is one in existence and we can see what it looks like. Fingers crossed this does come off and they can get past any teething problems as it's a great upgrade and so much better than that lardy lump of cast iron that is the dBilas manifold. thumbsup

until piper actually make the z22se exhaust manifold it's not possible to say whether the clam needs to be removed to fit it thumbsup they are going to make it as a direct replacement for the standard z22se cast manifold, so it will fit the vx220 engine, hopefully they will produce something similar to the old regal 4-1 which should fit the vx220 without any clam mods

removing the rear clam isnt something that bothers me too much, but as for modifying the clam, i would probably wrap it in that heatstuff and possibly fix a heatshield against the clam, depending on how i feel at the time. the original heatshield may be of use if it can be modified in any way.

who wants to let piper use their car for the fitment test? (piper are based in folkstone in kent) its from the 5/01/08 - 9/01/08 in return you will get free fitment of the manifold and they are also doing rr'd tests of the manifold of before and after to prove that there are going to be gains on the car. cheers.

wont let me edit my post.

some questions i asked.

1. if you dont get a vx to test it on and you still take our deposit, do we get a refund if we find it doesnt fit to the vx220?
2. is the rr'd before and after tests included in the price?

Chris

Thank you for your questions. And good ones they are too. Granted we are not a VX220 specialist but we are no strangers to working on performance cars in our workshop. In the past 6 months we have worked on Ferraris, Morgans, Nobles, Lotus Exige and a Lotus 2Eleven to name a few. We have already done some work on the VX220 in the past when we had to develop the rear box for it. During that we had to remove the clam to gain good access. Here are a couple of pictures of the part we developed.

Posted Image - Rear of car.
Posted Image - Rear box.

I am also happy to show anyone around our factory to ensure that they are happy and confident in leaving their car here. All the time we have the car here it will be kept inside our development factory and fully insured. When on the road for testing it again will be fully insured.

In answer to your questions:

1 - If we are not able to borrow a VX220 during the development we shall not take final payment or send out these to VX220 owners until one has been fitted and confirmed that it will indeed fit. We would ask one of the owners to try fitment first. If it turns out that it does not fit then we will refund your deposits until a time that a VX220 becomes avaliable to us for development.

2 - The rolling road testing is not for each car. We shall do this to one of the development cars to ensure it works before releasing the product. The before test will be done on Monday morning and the after test once the product is fitted. We shall of course show you the results.

I hope this is all okay.

Kind Regards

I'd love to put my name on the list - but a bit wary of paying a large deposit before they know whether they can make it fit!

lol, i just answered this i your PM.

here is what gary said

Chris

Thank you updating people. Cheers for the offer of using your car for a day but we would really need to have one here for the full time we do the development so we can take measurements as and when we develop and route each of the primarys. This way we can be 100% sure it will fit. If we design it around the Astra alone we are in danger of fouling something on the VX220 that the Astra does not have. If we are unable to find a VX220 in time for the development then i will happily send you the first finished version for fitment. Then you can confirm that all is okay or if there are any problems.

Kind Regards

Presumably this will be similar to the tubular one Regal used to sell, before changing to the Dbilas, if so it should fit
