yepI believe the reason is that the intake air temp gets too high as compressed air gets hot.

No, not only due to the charge cooling:
Stage 1 has a bigger pulley (?? "), so less charger rpm's and pressure => no need for chargecooling. (They say...)
Stage 2, smaller pulley (3.35") , more pressure, more heat => chargecooling needed... (and + 40ps
