My cap on top of the oil filter is leaking, I have tried using the square hole in its top to tighten but that has no mevement at all but there is a clear leak coming from it. There seem to be notches lower down that look C spanner like, is there something you can do with them? Thanks Martin s

Martin the cap is a separate part from the housing , the notched piece you can see is the housing ,below that is the cooler sandwich plate which has the two seal rings which are probably the cause of your leak ,so either use a 32 mm socket and a bar to secure the whole thing or remove the filter cap and try and tighten the housing with some adjustable type pliers ( easier said than done ) .

Above is where they normally leak from but if yours is definatly the cap then the seal may of been nipped slightly. Usually get a new one with a filter (that right with the NAs?) Make sure you oil the new seal before fitting so it doesnt nip

Take my advice and don't leave it to chance weeping any oil. Cost me dearly when I missed mine! Get your hands on some oil cooler adaptor gaskets. If you get desperate you can borrow some of mine and then just replace when you can get your hands on some. thumbsup When tightening the cap you do need to give it some force to help tighten the oil cooler adaptor onto the engine block. If you need the gaskets sending let me know and I'll get them in the post first thing in the morning and they should be with you Friday or Saturday morning.

So to confirm, there is a cap on top that has the large square hole in the top for tightening, below that are two rings with cuts in for tightening and the rubber seal is between them? Do I have to take the cap off to tighten them? Do they bot tighten clockwise? Why is a lid to an oil filter so complicated? I have a drawing of it all, and can see one ring and two gaskets. I need to sort this out fast as am doing Donington on Monday. Martin s

Not quite.

There is a oil filter cap (with 1/2 square drive and 32mm socket cap), then below that should be a rubber o-ring.

This o-ring no13 is meant to keep the cap no.12 (which has the oil filter no.15 clipped onto it) removable from oil filter Adaptor no.13(only on the VX) which then has a £2 metal gasket no.5 (the one we had problems getting hold of a while back) which sits above the oil cooler adaptor no.4 (the bit the oil pressure switch is attached to) and then there is another one of the £2 metal gaskets no.5 below that. These all screw onto the bottom end of the engine.

The problem is that the cap, gets stuck to the filter adaptor and means that the two gaskets either side of the cooler adaptor get damaged and leak. Hopefully there should be a pic below from the EPC that helps explain things.

1. So to confirm, there is a cap on top that has the large square hole in the top for tightening, below that are two rings with cuts in for tightening and the rubber seal is between them?

Not quite, see above

2. Do I have to take the cap off to tighten them?

You will probably find the cap and the oil filter adaptor assembly (looks like a metal casket that the oil filter sits inside) are stuck together. In this scenario you will probably have to take the whole lot out and replace the two gaskets and gently screw the whole lot back together (it is fiddly) gently and then tighten up well with the cap. If the cap does come free from the filter adaptor then tightening the adaptor probably requires a special tool to do it officially - sure Techie or Nelly mentioned how to do this earlier

3. Do they bot tighten clockwise?

Think it is anti-clockwise, but it has been a while

4. Why is a lid to an oil filter so complicated? I have a drawing of it all, and can see one ring and two gaskets.

No idea... Just clever / awkward design ideas.

The oil filter was changed a couple of weeks ago amd I guess leaking since then, so only the top part will have been off though I guess this may have affected the lower gaskets. Can someone confirm whether to tighten all the things in that area are clockwise,or anti clockwise as I'm famous for stripping bolts! Can someone also point me in the direction of the designer so I can slap them around the head for such a daft set up! Martin s

Isn't it something mental like 120 for the sleeve and something normal like 25 for the cap?

Just checked the oil level and its gone from high to low in 200 miles and to be safe (and get it done right) have got it booked into BOT tomorrow. They say they change all gaskets and rings each time the oil filter is changed as they are so cheap and theyve seen this problem before. Lucky I spotted a small amount of oil on my garage floor as my car doesnt burn oil hardly at all and would have probably killed the engine on the next drive (probably on the way to Donington). So anyone whos changed there oil filter lately, just have a look at the oil filter area and make sure theres no oil coming out! Martin s

There is a special vauxhall tool to tighten the oil cooler adapter up ive just had to dig it out in work to tighten mine when it came loose while changing the filter. its a circular plate with lugs that locate in the adapter slots and 3/8 drive hole in centre. happy to lend it to anyone overnight local in need.

I found it easier to use a ring spanner than a socket when i did mine.It just fit it in but the socket would not as the pipe above got in the way .First think i would try is just nip it up witha ring spanner as it may not have been tightened enough when changed ( you hope)If not then its as above ,Oh i had to move my air intake pipe out the way one clip one bolt.

Well, with it being borrowed from work getting it back the next day would be there stipulation. chances are they wouldnt need it the next day but if they did and it wasnt there! :9mm: or :flame:

Wasn't someone looking into getting something made up for less than that?
