Well as I'm between VX's at the moment having sold the SC beastie and my current speedster having a respray my mate somehow has lent me his really tidy Westfield for a while.

Had a chance to take it on a good run round the North Yorkshire moors today and thought I'd report back in case anyone was thinking of buying one.

To get to the Moors the first job was a hack up the A1. This was not good. Theres only the small aero screen and no doors of course so although a helmet is essential you still get a fair old buffeting and it feels really exposed in traffic.

Finally managed to get off the A1 and after clearing the villages near the A1 got a good run up to Hawes via Layburn and Bedale. From Hawes took the road down to Settle and then dropped down to Leeds and home via Skipton. Luckily some of the roads were pretty deserted and the Westy had little trouble overtaking when the opportunity came.

Overall I'd say on the right road the Westy knocks spots of the VX in terms of handling but the issue is really getting to and finding a road smooth enough to fully enjoy it. Whereas with the VX you can cruise up the motorway and enjoy the crap roads with the excellent chassis and suspension the Westy struggles to cope with bad sufraces and big shocks and bumps appear where you know the VX would soak them up. A lot of that is down to the lack of weight in the Westy no doubt.

I'd love to do a trackday in the Westy there would be no comparison with a VX which would feel like a barge! But as an overall ownership proposition despite this particular example being about as good as they get it wouldnt make me part with a VX. If I had a car with a tow bar and a trailer I would definitely consider one for track use though.

The car itself is the best of its type I've seen. It was fully rebuilt with a new chassis and engine in 2004 by a JLR engineer and it really shows. There are loads of lovely little details in the design such as a drop down panel in the pax footwell that gives access to the fuses and an engine bay with no visible wiring! My mate has spent a lot of time sorting out the suspension too as the old setup was a little bit mismatched.

Full spec is as follows:

Model: Westfield SEW
Engine: 2.0ltr Ford Zetec on Jenvey 45mm throttle boddies, Emerald management, Raceline manifold and repackable exhaust, 93db static.
Electrics: Lightweight Denso alternator, lightweight battery
Power to Weight: 308bhp/ton (165bhp & 535kgs)
Performance: GPS data logged at 4.7sec 0-60
Transmission: Ford 5 speed Type9
Differential: Quaife ATB 3.9:1 differential in an English axle
Braking: Floor mounted pedals with twin master cylinders, M-16 twin pot calipers up front with Mintex 1144 pads, drums at the rear
Suspension: Avo shocks, 250/150lb springs, front and rear adjustable ARBs
Wheels and Tyres: Minilight 14x6" alloy wheels with Yokohama A048R 185x60 rubber
Steering: Escort 2.2 quick rack with lock stops, SPA quick-release wheel boss and suede Sparco wheel
Cockpit: RAC roll over bar, GRP buckets, Sabelt 3" 4 point harnesses

It happens to be up for sale too for a bargain £9000 so if you're interested drop me a line and I'll pass you the details.

I cant imagine why anyone would spend 50k on one when a 9k'er is this good. Any more power would be unuseable on the road for starters.

Vibration white body sums it up. Took me a good hour to return to normal after a 4 hour run out today.

shame, i was in all those places today, could have met up. You werent in northallerton earlier on as well were you? Saw a similar colour blue 'westie' parked on the high street... There are some nice little twisty bits over that way.. Did see a knob in an alfa 156 2.0jts (presumably the ts in jts stands for tosser), pulling some stupid overtakes just before bends etc...

Been out for another run today down to a local benchmarking b road of mine. My god its good! If you get a smooth tight twisty bit of road its totally devastating. Having driven the same road in the SC VX, Z4M, tuned RS Megane etc I can safely say I've never attacked it so quickly. You can just start loosing traction in 3rd and the balance is so good you can just bleed a tiny bit of throttle off and it gently drifts a bit and sorts itself out. Brilliant fun. Unfortunately the bits inbetween decently surfaced roads are a total nightmare. Almost had to pull over to be sick as well early in the run just because it throws you about so much on anything other than a smooth road.

Just as a small further update it would appear that my couple of drives in the westy has resulted in me injuring my back. You really get thrown about in anything but the smoothest of roads. I don't think they are for me but I'll remember last weekends drive as one of the best. As an all round road car I honestly don't think they are as good as a VX.

What sort of power output comes from the zetec in these? My friend had a megabussa westie last summer which had a 240bhp bike engine in it, it was without doubt the craziest car I have ever driven. It did however have a full cage..... dont think I could cope with the half cage. We often go for runswith just shades or clear glasses on dont really need the helmet IMHO. He sold it to buy the megablade version to compete in a series locally. It's fast too!

Iirc it has about 165 bhp, 300 per tonne. It's more than quick enough and to be honest it would be difficult to actually use much more power on the road in these types of car.

I agree. But when someone earns upwards of £500k a year it is all relative

Being rich doesn't equal knowing what a good car is lol Bragging rights down the golf club might be more important than having a car thats actually any good on the road for some though I guess.

Very true but in this case I have to acknowledge that my cousin has good taste. He has a 911 Turbo, a Nissan GT-R and the Caterham R500 Superlight in the stable. I am not jealous, just glad to be related chinky chinky
