Had a chance to take it on a good run round the North Yorkshire moors today and thought I'd report back in case anyone was thinking of buying one.
To get to the Moors the first job was a hack up the A1. This was not good. Theres only the small aero screen and no doors of course so although a helmet is essential you still get a fair old buffeting and it feels really exposed in traffic.
Finally managed to get off the A1 and after clearing the villages near the A1 got a good run up to Hawes via Layburn and Bedale. From Hawes took the road down to Settle and then dropped down to Leeds and home via Skipton. Luckily some of the roads were pretty deserted and the Westy had little trouble overtaking when the opportunity came.
Overall I'd say on the right road the Westy knocks spots of the VX in terms of handling but the issue is really getting to and finding a road smooth enough to fully enjoy it. Whereas with the VX you can cruise up the motorway and enjoy the crap roads with the excellent chassis and suspension the Westy struggles to cope with bad sufraces and big shocks and bumps appear where you know the VX would soak them up. A lot of that is down to the lack of weight in the Westy no doubt.
I'd love to do a trackday in the Westy there would be no comparison with a VX which would feel like a barge! But as an overall ownership proposition despite this particular example being about as good as they get it wouldnt make me part with a VX. If I had a car with a tow bar and a trailer I would definitely consider one for track use though.

The car itself is the best of its type I've seen. It was fully rebuilt with a new chassis and engine in 2004 by a JLR engineer and it really shows. There are loads of lovely little details in the design such as a drop down panel in the pax footwell that gives access to the fuses and an engine bay with no visible wiring! My mate has spent a lot of time sorting out the suspension too as the old setup was a little bit mismatched.
