Hi Guys .... Just out of interest does anyone know anything about this VX that has just been listed for sale on www.trademe.co.nz. No year given, done a million kms and out of Ireland. Black with silver hardtop. The car looks as rough as guts, not very nice at all. I have tried to upload a pic. Check out listing Lotus Vauxhall on www.trademe.co.nz I'm not interested in the vehicle just curious about it history and what you guys think. Thanx Orggy

The key question is what the going rate for them in New Zealand is. He's asking as from 10.5k in gbp pounds, but if they are rare as feck over there, it could be a resonable price. It still needs some tlc though. 100.000 km is not a million :P Mine has done 130.000 and still going strong.

You would pay 15% Goods and Services Tax to the NZ Government on the total cost including the car, freight etc this would reduce based on the amount of time you owned the car in the UK. My VXT cost $US1200 to ship in a container, customs cost etc approx $NZ600 and about $NZ1000 for compliance and rego.

The VXT I looked at in Oct was a 2004 done 40,000 miles sold for about 17,000 pounds last month, I didnt like the car so I decided to import my own and it owes me a lot less than that and is a better lower milage car. I am not sure it would be a money making exercise, I got a good deal in the UK.

There is a 2004 111R done 41,000 kms for sale here @ $NZ52,000 (25,000 pounds) that and the fact I think the VXT is a better car is why I am driving a VXT.

I sent a car out to NZ a few years ago to a friend. Took into account all the costs etc... What we didn't know was how strict the inspections are when a car is going in. It was a three year old Passat in very good condition, however, as a UK car it had minor corrosion underneath, we were forced to fit lots of new bits to the car even though it was MOT'd when leaving the UK. It made the whole exercise expensive and we came to the conclusion that they don't like people importing cars so make it awkward and expensive. Maybe just a one off bad experience?? Anyone else on here done it?? My friend now wants a Range Rover sport sending over, but we're a bit concerned what they will make of that one.

That is the reason why I didnt want a cat C or D car because they can make you do rhe repair again if they feel it isnt right, I have a mate who is probably the largest import of American cars and he will not touch damaged cars or trucks. I didnt want anything that had been modified exhaust etc to be on the safe side. My car had a 3 week old MOT when it left England and the compliance guys did the rear brakes and adjusted the lights which they reckoned were all over the place. The main thing is the vehicle MUST be Euro 04 compliant or it will not pass.

My brother emigrated to NZ few years ago but sold his TVR in the UK as he knew it wouldn't pass emissions testing. Funny thing is that as he's a mechanical engineer who used to work for Visteon/Ford initially his only job option out there was to work for the transport dept in NZ government. He spent his whole time arguing with the NZ guys about emissions laws, speed limits etc as they couldn't see how prohibitive they were. He's now gone to the other side and works for the LVVTA (http://www.lvvta.org.nz) that checks imported & modified cars and offers advice to get them through the system. Unfortunately a downside of his job is that he's often in court as an expert witness when drivers are charged with reckless driving etc having crashed as they like to try to blame it on the car modifications.

Your brothers job would be interesting to say the least. Kiwis have been modifying and racing anything with wheels for decades and with the lack of parts available often making or altering what was available...the number 8 fencing wire mentality still exists. When the Government opened the borders to millions of used Japanese imports all sorts of rice rockets arrived you can imagine 15-16 year old kids in obscenely powerful front wheel drive hatchbacks.Nothing changes really, I can remember my Dad getting me heaps because I put twin carbs and extractors on the old 105E Anglebox.
