Does anyone have any recommendations for people to use to port a SAAB head (and obviously to check it's ok and replace the valve guides)? I may as well begin getting mine together...

I'd need to check the head is good and there are no cracks in it first. Dr Lee also said it's quite possible to bugger it up and not actually make it flow any better as well...

That goes for any head....

I've seen/tested 'ported' heads that reduce flow/increase flow for some lifts and then fall off rapidly etc. All good fun.

Infact I've increased flow/velocity by reducing the port size in some cases :)

I have a porting kit, but started polishing the bit in the combustion chamber and decided that was hard work... It didn't help that I didn't have a compressor or die grinder really up to doing the job :/

I did mine myself with a dremel, z22 rather than Saab head but principals the same. If you are actually going to change the shape of the ports then find an expert, but if your just going to widen them a little and remove any casting marks etc then anyone can do it. Just avoid the valve seats themselves.

You could try Neil Roper, he did good job on my head it seems. When I talked to him, he conseratively thought he'd improve VE by about 2% or 3% on my Z20LET head by porting it.

seems a little higher than the going rate for someone experienced in head for cash  but not terrible given cheap ones can wreck things.

Head porting is expensive due to the amount of boredom of doing it

That price did include the fitting of new valve guides and the extra work needed for the +1.0mm oversixe valves.
What do you expect to pay ?
Any of the other people mentioned will charge similar money.

Steve
