I've recently found my seats have been causing me back pain because they are absolutely rock hard, literally no padding is left on the back sections at all. It has clearly just degraded over time to nothing.

So I've done a bit of digging and found severl Lotus owners have replaced the padding in their seats with a special gel foam from the states. It comes in 2 different thicknesses and from what I've read on SELOC and Lotus Talk people seem very, very happy with it.

It looks pretty easy to install, the central sections are just pealed off and then stuck back down. It looks pretty much idiot proof.

Enough foam to do both seats comes in at $70 but postage from the US is quite expensive.

There has been a group buy on SELOC before with a 15% discount and more importantly combined postage. Is anyone interested in joining me in ordering some? If most people's seats are anything like my own the foam if probably well past its best!

Hi Muncher, Sounds good from the Lotus feedback, but I find mine amazingly comfortable for what they are and don't tend to drive for more than an hour and a half often....but, if you are going to strip your seat down to this level, I'd recommend fitting a heated seat kit at the same time as you'll be doing all the hard work on the seat strip anyway. It might add another £70 (for the Waeco kit anyway) to your upgrade, but you will appreciate it once the winter rolls around again. BossVX did a a great guide which might help you out with the strip down, plenty of pics Imnotworthy

Some seats may well be fine but mine are completely knackered in terms of back padding, just solid with a leather covering. It looks like you can try plenty different variations of thickness and placement to get it just right for you. I have toyed with the idea of adding heated elements but I don't typically drive it during the winter. I will be adding harness holes at the same time though.

It's worth doing the padding the ones I have just got have been done and are almost as comfy as cloth seats.

I'll get in touch with them and get some prices. I don't think it matters what you order as postage will be the main issue.

I've just got some prices back and if we can get 20 people who want some it becomes really very cheap indeed, down to less than the cost of a tank of petrol + delivery. I'll post some prices once they have confirmed delivery charges which they are looking into.

OK, if 20 people want enough material to do a pair of seats it is going to cost around £45-50 delivered for the foam based on 1/2 roll of the 3/8" and half a roll of the 1/8" foam. It's progressively more expensive for lower numbers up to £90 per car for a mere handful of people. How does that sound?

BR, Per

Tillet fibreglass seat fits but is still expensive - GBP 800 each (inc runners, suede inserts and VAT). Good seat if you are slim or have fat on your back not as good if you have medium sized or larger chest but no fat on your back.

I spent ages trying to get my std seat right but the design was never going to work for me. If you are looking for a cheap solution my suggestion would be to fabricate your own from Aluminium or Fibreglass but be sure it is strong enough so it does not break in the event of an accident.

Best regards, Paul

AFAIK, there is no padding in the back of the seat from new, only in the base....

Really? Junks seemed to think something was amiss with mine. All the lotus seats I have sat in have padding there apart from possibly the S1s.
