Odd one for this forum, but does or has anyone owned a Mk 5 Golf Gti? The missus likes them, far more than anything else I've considered as a new car, and I don't much care so long as: -fairly good on fuel (35mpg would be nice) -can tow without feeling underpowered or overwhelmed by the trailer -decent to drive when not towing -the missus likes it -fits in my relatively small garage (Astra/Golf/Focus is as big as can go) I cannot though find the gross vehicle weight for it, although some info seem to suggest a 1400kg max tow weight. Aim is to drive and tow without B+E and therefore stick to the 3.5t MAM regs. I do have option, depending on what race car I buy, of under-rating the trailer with a new plate.

I ran an Edition30 (MK5 GTI+) for 2years :)

Loved it, ran 330bhp with remap, exhaust and intake.

Very capable car and a decent following.... MK5 Golf GTI Forum

Cocopops has an ed30, go for that if you can stretch to one. I've just ordered a new GTD, Mk6 but based on mk5 and i very much enjoyed driving it.

Will have a look, thanks for the tips. Always wary of going to other forums, really glad to be recommended somewhere not chavvy! I do want completely standard if possible, leather would be a plus but not that bothered. Was yours DSG? Of all the people I know who've had Golfs and VAG cars over the years, don't know of any who had DSG.

DSG is for family wagons (where it is bloody good), not hot hatches.

Had a new, 2005 A3 S-line 2.0T (so same engine) & couldn't get 30 mpg out of it, however hard I tried. Lovely car, hated it at first but it really grew on me. Been out in a 2.0TDi Golf Mk6 with a DSG box today & it really is a lovely gearbox. If any auto gearbox suits a hot hatch it's the DSG box.

Morning, owned a mk5 GTI 56 plate, with the 18" monza alloys, 3 door manual...owned it about 18months, loved it! I am trying to get the Mrs to get one now :P, i'd certainly buy one again...think I bought it 6-9months old from a dealer...reluctant sale, but had to buy a place to live when i moved jobs... i used to get around 32-35mpg if motorway driving, great car. ed30 is what i wanted though...coudln't afford it...seems to be holding its price fairly well..if i remember correctly, the mk5 golf kind of kicked off the whole 'white is cool again'... thumbsup from me.
