Arrived at work this morning and noticed the fuel filler cap (yes the bit that the ignition key goes into) was missing. Now I’m pretty sure it was there when I set off so it’s somehow fallen off en-route (!) Question is how do I get a replacement? I’m guessing that finding one I can use with the current ignition key in is going to be hard so has anybody got a recommendation for a replacement? It would be nice if it sort-of matched the car even if I do need to carry around another key for it. Cheers, B P.S. car is an ’03 tubby

Fortunately, any VX ignition key will open the VX fuel cap, they are not matched to the key number, and have a generic lock barrel thumbsup Try ElizP on here for a second hand one

I decided to buy a new cap from Autovaux in the end. It comes in 2 pieces, the cap and the locking barrel. Problem is when I insert the barrel it doesn’t quite sit flush with the cap standing proud by a few mm. Is there a trick to getting it correctly assembled? I really don’t want to remove the key from the barrel until I am sure it’s ok. Thanks, BrianJ

Have you fitted the circlip type thing that holds the barrel into the cap? When I swapped a barrel across to another cap, it wasn't flush. Had to apply a fair bit of pressure to get the barrel in far enough to get the clip on. Once that clip is on it seemed fine.

Never realised any key would open them, how much is a new one? Mine is very tight to open and close and I do worry the key may break in it one day.

Thanks techieboy – all done now. My (silly) mistake was not removing the little circlip before trying to insert the barrel. Once I did that it went together no problem at all and is now sitting nice and flush. Ta. As for cost the filler cap about £53 BUT you’ll need the barrel as well and that is around £13 (both plus P&P) from Autovaux. A cheaper alternative would be to buy a second hand one or maybe try giving yours a clean-up. BrianJ

I had the same problem and the same worry. WD40 sprayed into the lock barrell using the straw attachment solved the problem. thumbsup

One further comment is that my ignition key (2003 VXT) doesn’t fit the new barrel so will need to make sure I have the new key with me or I could have an embarrassing ‘out of fuel problem’. Will be leaving the new key in the car to be safe! BrianJ
