So which size should I fit, 40Amp or 55Amp

I'm thinking the 2.7Kg 40Amp but should I fit the 3.25Kg 55Amp

40a more than enough for a car with no elec windows, no aircon, no electric seat etc etc

that was my thinking, I did a rough max current load and it was below 40Amps but I do like to over-engineer things :P

40A is enough, except if you drive at night a lot with all lights on

I voted 55amp. Recall those SC'd cars that snapped belts 3 years ago, lasting for about an hour on their battery alone.

main beam with the heater blower on full and the wipers on fast is certainly worst case, oh and the abs kicks in, would need the 55A for that lot

I rarely use it at night and have only driven in the rain twice :P

That would mean Neil actually driving it though. So I voted 40A :D

I have the bigger 075 battery fitted so perhaps I should play it safe and fit the 55Amp

Neil,

What's the lightest alternator I can get for my track car? I want to lose all my current light units & fit basic LED rear brake lights & front covers. But, I want to fit an electric water pump setup to lose my radiator fans.

...As for your car, what's wrong with your current alternator? Can't you just replace it with a standard alternator replacement? ...I know where there's a really good standard one which happens to be in my car! :groupjump:

Would the sc belt be too much of a strain on the aftermarket alternator?

If not buy 2 chinky chinky :D

Are you replacing because the alternator died? Mine died a few weeks ago too (electrical - not the brushes)... I wonder if it's the higher rev limit, or noise from the ECU?

For a track car you could probably take the alternator out and it'd work fine for hours without lights/fan/stereo? Then you just swap out or charge off the car... Probably not turning the alt would save a few bhp.

There's always the Belt Alternator Starter from the US green line cars. Not exactly lighter though :)

I would suggest the 40Amp 2.5Kg version thumbsup

Nothing wrong with the 100A currently fitted, just not in keeping with the rest of the engine and weighs too much :P
