I'm going to be replacing my fuel tank for a nice shiny Pro Alloy one shortly and could do with a little advise. I've had a look through the TIS and a number of threads but there aren't any specific how too's.

I kinda understand most of it except how to disconnect the fuel filler and the three breathers with the clam on, the TIS just says disconnected without going into how. If anyone has done this I'd appreciate any advise and pointers to any potential problems thumbsup

While I'm at it, I've heard getting the "quick release" fuel feed pipes off the pump is a real pain, is this the tool I need.......

They were dead easy to disconnect on the two pump housings I've had and I didn't need any tool (unlike me not to use the excuse to buy one as well). Just pinch and pull.

Yeah easy to do that. Here's a question though, how do you disconnect the filler neck etc?

Courtenay's did it all from underneath the car when they did mine. Definitely make sure you disconnect the fuel pump connections first to save them getting broken. I assume on the standard tank, you can then just about reach up over the top of it and get enough access to the hose clamps to undo them. Maybe need to undo the tank fixings and lower it slightly on a jack to give a little more clearance.

Failing that, I guess it's clam off and undo the breather hoses and the filler hose further up at the charcoal canister and drop the tank out with the remaining sections of those hoses still attached.

Hmm may take the rear clam off then. I've been wanting to do it for another little project I've got in mind but a little scared as it's another job I've never done.

No need for clam off boys - as long as you have axel stands and 2 jacks ;) You can get to the filler top as is but VERY tight, basically drop the tank a slight bit to allow room to undo. But as its such a royal pain to get to and poss fuel pump changing int he future just cut the hole bigger and nice and easy to remove clips. While out tidy it up (easier than while tank if there) Few hrs work, get cold beer in the fridge ;) In fact you can loose all the carbon stuff if you want also and thats clam on, clam off makes a load of things quicker but as with most things on the vx can be done blind with leaving stuff on ;) DG

Yep, I was also going to take the opportunity to enlarge the inspection hole thumbsup Duncan I know what your saying about doing things blind, but that's much harder when you've never seen what your trying to undo or even what sort of clips you up against, with that in mind I think I'll be taking the rear clam off.........right, how exactly do I do that  Deano thanks for the offer but I'll have to do this mid week because I don't get many weekends off. As long as I can get the clam off I think I'll be ok ;) chinky chinky

It's too long to to remeber details, but I do remember it was easier than I expected. I have big hands and hate working in confined arears, but all came in and out without enlarging any holes. The rear clam on the other hand is a major PITA and I expect would take longer than the tank change
