A few months back I bought 2 Toyo 888 rears, after some fighting 1 went on, the other did not, despite 4 garages having a go and pressures upto 120 psi being used. It went back to Camskill who apparently sent it to Toyo to asess. Toyo apparently said it was fine and after 3 months sent it back to me and charged me £30 for the privelage. For 2 months now I have been asking Camskill for a contact at Toyo who can explain to me what they did and as theyre so sure its fine, where I can get it fitted as no Toyo dealers or other places could do it, even though they have been fitting 888's on the same wheels for years for me. Still I have no response from Camskill and its gone on so long that I am now at the point of needing 2 new rear 888's again. No one around here will go near my car if I turn up with 888's, its all very annoying and the fact that Camskill just keep ignoring me is very frustrating. I have no doubt the tyre is faulty but have never encountered a situation where someone just sais, no mate your wrong have this useless piece of crap back. What to do now? Martin s Interestingly I had to get a replacement for the duff tyre from Demon Tweeks as Camskill had run out and that also put up a fight and after 3 garages and £40 quids worth of trying, 100 psi and 4 hours of leaving it, the bugger went on. Has quality changed on them?

Contact Toyo directly and arrange for the tyre to be fitted at their Northampton offices. If they say it is OK, they should be able to get the bugger on.

As the supplier your argument is with Camskil not Toyo. If you're really sure that it's not fit for purpose ie. it wont go on the correct sized rim then write them a letter stating this and saying unless you receive a refund in 7 days you'll take them to court. Then issue a money claim online, you'll eventually need letters from the places that tried to fit it as evidence. What it will mean is that Camskil will have to attend (or their representative) your local court to explain themselves. You may find they will settle before this.

There is an issue with these, I needed two new 888s on my 15" rears before seting off for Le Mans. Took them to a friend's garage and neither would seat. They were not clearing a distinct lip on the casting of the Compomotives. He gave up, I brought them home where a combination of my 90psi compressor, copious quantities of WD40 and then leaving them in the sun caused them both to pop. Whether it's a 'problem' or a 'fault', I can't say. I hear of difficulties fitting run flats to the extent many fitters refuse to fit them. Next time, I'll go to a motorsport orientated garage that will have superior equipment. I've never heard of an issue in the PBMW paddock, so suspect it is more of an issue with Compomotive rims. What were you fitting them to, Martin?

Martin, did you try taking it to a lorry/agricultural tyre fitter, they are used to working with higher pressures, might be worth a punt.

:yeahthat:

C&S tyres near me are commercial fitters and they have never had issues with R888's, A048's or RS-R's in fact one guy said "they are a peice of p*ss mate"

I did see three of them getting a HGV tyre off with what looked like a pnematic drill once

surely the point is if the tyre sidewall says max inflate 50psi, then were do you stand if you have a blowout after fitting them with 150psi (still didn't fit)

It's a fair point, but if they simply will not go on like my rear R1R's what do you do? My current rear R888 took 120+ psi to seat and I've done 3 track days on them with no issue.

Maybe small doses of gamma radiation has a detrimental effect on tyres, who'd have thought it

having recently reviewed some tyre dimensions it was obvious that for the same 225/45/17 , the Toyo really does push the tread width to the maximum with its square shoulder and sidewall junction construction. The people with Compo's with problems, do you know what width rim is it 8J or 7.5J ? By comparison the Federal RS-R in 225/45/17 was a lot easier to get it to bead, compared to the R888 we also struggled with. The 235/40/17 was a no no with a 7.5J rim, exactly same problem as the 888's.

The problem has been with Team dynamics 1.2's but I have had many, many 888's fitted before on them with no problems using 50 psi to pop them past the safety rim. I took it to a truck place who used 120 psi and vast amounts of lubricant and we had to give up with that one, but even the replacement went through 3 garages and only when left with a very high pressure in did it finally seat. There is as metioned a rsik that if you go too high trying to get them on they could get damaged and your stuffed then. Finally this afternoon Camskill have replied with a contact. They are probably fed up with me but this isnt an uncommon problem now, and I now have the contact at Toyo to talk to, but hes away. Will keep you informed, but more and more it seems Toyo 888's are giving more and more problems. Martin s

Not just R888's, my rear R1R's were much harder to fit. Don't thinks it's the rims, I've had T1R's, RS2's and KU31's on the same wheels with no problems.

I got full set of 888s fitted at Edgeware Tyre Brigade. Ive Speedlines, tyres went on no trouble. Great tyre, much the best Ive fitted so far. Just a pity they caused so much grief to find. Id look up ETB and have a word with them...Bit of a drive from Sussex but should be worth it. casino
