hi all my alternator is on its way out by the sounds of things. at tickover it makes a metallic grinding sort of noise and on rundown it makes a squeaking sort of noise, fairly hard to describe really, but im fairly convinced its the alternator unless anyone had had a similar issue? it's been like this for the last 1000 miles and hasnt got noticably worse, but with a europe trip coming up next month i figure i best get it sorted! i've spotted a new one on ebay for about £70, which i think is a fair price. however, just thought i'd ask before i part with the brass, if theres anywhere that does an service exchange type thing for cheaper? Cheers, andy

Loads of places do exchanges, just be careful on what you get as some have a longer regulator and wont fit with SC or 2.4 manifold. Are you sure its not the tensioner wheel? They can be a bit squeeky too.

Depends on the quality of the exchange I'm afraid. You can get rebuild kits to do them yourself.

Think I'll be needing a new one soon and for £90 new Autovaux sounds like a winner! Sure I read about different versions somewhere or is the one AV offer the correct one for my tubby?

The AV one was a Delphi I think which should be fine. Trying to locate an OEM Bosch one is hard and bloody expensive. There are other brands but they are cheaper and I would not trust them personally. AV were very helpful, give them a try....they only had one on the shelf when I posted that comment.....
