Going to replace the rubbish VDO speakers that are currently in situ, and have £40 of play vouchers to use up (I know not the best site for buying audio stuff, but need to get rid of these vouchers).

Came up with these 3 options for budget speakers (dont think any more ££ ones are worth it in the vx), what is general consensus? Am not looking to put a sub in at moment, but may later, and yes I know a miltech would sound even better.

JVC HX748

http://www.play.com/...er/Product.html
Sony XS F1736SE

http://www.play.com/...MS/Product.html
MTX RTC653

Is to work with a Sony MEX BT3800U header unit already installed http://www.sony.co.u...oth/mex-bt3800u

Also wondered about mounting the speakers with an MDF ring - does this make a big difference? And how does the VDO grill remove, had a quick twist and tug (oh matron) but it wasnt moving.

Cheers all

Hi Silent, JVC's will do you, 4 way is overkill when they are sat behing the seats, but the spec/cost would be my choice. I got some cheap Blaupunct? from ebay for mine, but anything will sound better than the 2quid ones fitted.

I fitted JBL ones in my Elise and they are superb. Anything over 2-way though is overkill, as already advised.

I bought some MDF rings when I mounted my new Alpine's. Great buy, they removed 95% of the vibrations I used to experience from the parcel shelf area. thumbsup

Turtle, can I ask how you mounted the rings? Did you go Grill>Speaker>MDF>Parcel shelf? Or did you mount the rings behind the parcel shelf?

Also I'm assuming you had to coat the MDF in something waterproof to stop it swelling if it got damp - what did you use?

Cheers

Yep: Grill>Speaker>MDF>Parcel shelf. I used primer and then gave 3 or 4 good coats of black wood paint. No issues so far with any warping since I fitted them ~6 months ago and I always have the roof off so they've definitely been exposed to the elements!

I've resisted the temptation to touch the oe system yet as I rarely use it. Only the odd time when on the motorway but am tempted to try a speaker upgrade as they really are poor. Is 6.5" (17cm) the best size for replacements & are there any limits on depth? Mdf speaker rings are a good idea & plenty on eBay ready cut to save making them yourself. Cheers.

I've had Pioneer speakers in a previous car & thought they were decent.

Cheers.

I had a look at this link (bit old but measurements will be same!), reckons depth of max 60-70mm. If you're putting an mdf ring as a spacer then could have deeper one?

Anything over £50 is a waste in the VX, no matter how many MDF rings you throw at it. The only cars that are a worse environment for any audio setup is a Caterfield or Morgan 3-wheeler.

Personally I'd strongly recommend adding a front pair in the dash rather than upgrading the rears. Then fade it slightly to the front. It's quite a bit more work but will be much better than simply upgrading the rears.

But changing the rears is cheap and easy.
