Hi Guys, A few days ago my ABS warning light came on unexpectedly whilst leaving work. I stopped the engine and when restarted the light had gone. When i was almost home it came on again, at the same time I noticed a strange whirring noise that appeared to be coming from the passenger side foot well. Once home I stopped the engine again, when I restarted it the light was off but soon came back on again accompanied by the strange noise. The light is on now permanently. I have checked the ABS connectors to each wheel and they seem fine. Is it likely that its the ABS pump has packed in? If so is there a way of fixing it or is it a new part job? I've not done a diagnostic check yet as I don't have a reader and don't really want to pay for a garage to check it, as i'd rather buy a reader myself. Anyone know if a OBD2 U480 scanner would do the trick? I've been looking at buying one of these anyways for any future issues. Cheers Carl

While the U480 will work happily with engine ECU related errors, it wont read the ABS ECU. You'll need a TECH2 or the much cheaper option of OP-COM.

My ABS light has been on for a few years now. Everybody that has connected it to (various) diagnostic tools says they can't get any response from the unit whatsoever. The general consensus is/was that my pump is fooked, when it 'went' I had identical symptoms to what you descibed above

My Opcom box and the Snapon diagnostic kit from my local garage can't get a response from my ABS ECU either; yet my ABS is functioning fine. How strange

My OP-COM communicates no problem, you have to use the chassis feature and sometimes I have to try different years but eventually it always finds the ecu, sorted Luke's car out when Ben was looking at it for the last MOT, even identified which sensor (broken wire) was gone, try different model years and remember to have the car running.
