Hi, on my way home tonight in my VXT, a fairly loud squeaking started. It gets faster and louder as the revs increase. It sounds a bit like when you are pushing a squeaky shopping trolley, squeak squeak squeak etc... you get the message. Does anybody know what this might be, or has anybody had this themselves? Also, I bought the car from Harrogate 2 weeks ago. Do I have to take it back there, or can I take it to the Vauxhall garage down the road, they also sell VX's, and they are both Network Q. I would appreciate any help from you guys :(

Does it do it when your stationary and blipping the throttle?
It might be a pulley.
Mines started with lovely wheel bearing noises now.

Yes, it does it when I'm stationary. Is this bad? Can I still drive the car, or could it break down?

And you're sure it's not coming from the wheels - ie the brake pads?

Squeeks can be numious things on a VX, are you sure it's comming from the engine bay?

Personally i wouln't drive it untill i knew what it was, in case it is something bad.
If you've got breakdown cover you could try them if no one from here can put there finger on the prob.

When the car is parked up, and the engine running, it squeaks while the engine is running. And if I dab the accelerator, the squeaking get faster and louder. I'm gonna go for a 10 minute drive to listen again. brb.

Right, just been out in it. It wasn't quite as prominent this time when I was driving, as it hit higher revs, it sounded more bitty and scatchy (sorry, it is just hard to describe sounds), but when I parked back on my drive, and revved it a little, it was the squeaky noise again. It sounds like the noise is coming from the mickey mouse ears (side air intakes) rather than directly from the lump. Any more ideas? I will get it checked tomorrow at a garage, but if anyone can shed some light I may sleep better. :)

Mine started doing it on start up a few weeks ago. Sounds like a loose fan belt? ish. Then gets quicker/louder under acceleration. Mines a vxt, was squeeking like a mouse being shafted by a rhino all the way to bruntingthorpe from the camp site at the national meet. Only went after a day thrashing there. Hasnt come back, dont know whether thats good? Does it do it all the time every time? Im not sure bout nidd vale as they couldnt sort a problem on my car despite 5 visits

Yep mine does this every now and again :beat: , took it into the garage who said it sounds like the polly v belt tensoiner (spelling), booked it in and the noise went away, they looked at it anyway and couldnt find anything wrong and since then its done it a couple more times but only for a few hours and then goes away. They said its nothing to worry about its got a warranty so im not :D .

There is a turbo problem with the pulley belt tensioner which causes it to squeak in the manner you describe, there is a replacement part available. There's definitely a thread about it on here somewhere. Ben

Rang CD Bramall this morning and spoke to the service department, and they were quite rude. They said they didn't have time to even listen to my engine for a couple of minutes until at least tuesday, then it would only be a listen, as they wouldn't be able to do anything till probably later in the week. Cheeky b#stards! They didn't even know that I bought the car elsewhere. I'm glad I didn't buy from them now. Their attitude was bad. If it is this pully tensioner thing, would it be ok to drive this weekend? :(

Here is the thread

CLICKY

I had this and it lead to total engine failure. :( ..I had to have a new engine fitted. Others have just ended up with a broken alternator belt.

IMHO get it checked asap

AndyB, How loud is the "squeaking"? My 6k mile Vxt has started squeaking in a similar manner today. It's very very loud more like an ear shattering screeching really. It's engine speed related.

I'm a little puzzled from reading the post. The known belt tensioner issue with the Vxt seems to cause a ticking noise not a squeaking/screeching noise. Is this correct?

Gonna get it looked at ASAP.

Jay

I'm taking it to the garage in the morning for the mechanic to have a listen. If you stick your ears near the drivers side, air intake, just in front of the rear whell, the sound seems to come from that area. It's like a squeaking belt or something. The performance seemed to have dipped today, 2nd and 3rd gear didn't pull as well as usual on a couple of occassions, and I swear that the turbo didn't kick in until 4k revs once or twice too. Gonna tell the garage I want it all checking. When your engine is idling, can you hear a slight ticking noise, tick tick tick, fairly fast? Don't know if this is normal, I'm pretty sure it didn't do it when I picked it up two weeks ago. I'll post the outcome tomorrow!

Jay, how much difference does your AMD stage 2 and milltek exhaust make compared to standard? Speed wise! Also, does it increase your insurance and fuel consumption much?? :)

Same place as mine.. Keep us informed of the outcome tomorrow. Real busy at the mo so think it'll be some time before I can book it in.

I'm very happy with the results, sounds perfect to me now and pulls like a train! There's loads of threads relating to this, do a quick search there's some good write ups. Lots of other exhausts and remaps available from other tuners as well now. Insurance went up £200/yr for the exhaust :( . Fuel consumption is obviously very poor if I go for a play and as per standard if you drive "normally".

Jay, I took it to a local dealers this morning on the way to the office, and the mechanic came out to have a listen And guess what, the squeaking stopped, so he never heard it. He said it will probably be the tensioner thingymebob which links to the altinator. When I parked up at work, a loud vibrating noise has started behind where I sit, this only does this when it ticks over, and when I rev it slightly, it disappears. So I'm guessing it is something which is slightly loose and needs tightening up. Would you or anyone else know what this might be. If it's still doing it tomorrow afternoon, I'll let the mechanic have a look as i'm at the garage changing a bulb. :) So, would you recommend a stage 2?? ;)

I had a similar problem on a car I had some years ago. It turned out to be the alternator bearing. I found this out when it seized and snapped the belt.
