On the contents of my Tullett de-cat silencer. 16 months, 8 trackdays and 8,000 miles after fitting.

Jesus wept, I'm not doing that again. It took longer to separate the outer section from the inner than removing the undertrays and the bloody silencer in the first place. This exhaust is gonna smoke like a dodgy turbo when this goes back together.

Nope. It's still fully packed and no sign at all of anything breaking down (although there's no wire wool in there so that might have evaporated, if it was in there to start).

Not sure whether I want to go through the hassle of removing the main silencer now......

Will have to re-do it now anyway as the wadding in there is now liberally soaked in Plus Gas. :beat:

So, what do we reckon on the main silencer. That's been on the car for 2 years 1 month and done 12+ trackdays and 14,000 miles and is now on it's second engine.

Posted Image

The bloody OEM exhaust heatshield had pretty much welded itself to the underside of the silencer.

Nowhere near the marketing picture.

I imagine the marketing picture was done with hot air, as opposed to combustion gas as that would look shitty for a promo shot.

Pretty sure it's not Acousta-Fil in the de-cat silencer. Whatever it is, it's clearly not gone anywhere.

Should have followed my own advice.

Well, that stuffing certainly hasn't gone anywhere. Bugger. No easy wins on the noise front there.

From a man who knows... Single exit pipe saved me a good chunk of db in the first instance, Gonzo style to the floor helped a lot. New system only 96db.

Its a design flaw afaics. that is no more of a silencer than a VSE is.

It's going off to a local exhaust place to have a new tailpipe section fitted with just one "live" exit on plus a dummy.

I do wonder whether there's too much stuffing in there but, looking at the acoustic properties of Acousta-Fil, it only has a -10dB effect on lower frequency noise whereas it has a -50dB effect at higher frequencies. That would certainly tie in with the grating continual low frequency drone that it has.
