Edit: Gear Selector Cables even... (Can't edit title ?) Hi All, Just went round to see how the cable installation was going. Cables are on, but mechanic noted: These new ones are much stiffer than the standard ones (fine) & they are getting very close to the exhaust (worrying). The old ones were routed pretty much along the same route. Maybe a bit further away because of being more 'flexible'. But on the standard ones, that section of the cables is shrouded with metal. No such thing on the Cable Craft ones. Struggling to get some good clearance between cables and exhaust. Especially with these ones being less flexible. Also, the old ones seemed to have been held in place with some wire hanger type materials (as in hand twistable) at some points. Wondering if if that was normal or previous owner/garage had 'improvised'. Hate to have to get another set of cables because these ones start meting from exhaust. I'm guessing that is what happened to last set. Any Suggestions ? Thanks, Zuber

There is a metal hanger for the cables. I think some people turn it round to gain clearance on the exhaust. Might be worth a look.

Buy some sort of heat wrap and use it on the cables. You could use metalised and insulated stuff (expensive) or just exhaust wrap would work reasonably I think.

We aim to please.

Can only speak for OEM cables on the NA but on my car at least, it the cables just uses the one (or two if you include the alloy hanger bracket on the shear panel) steel hanger bracket on the underside of the engine next to the sump and then routes up rear face of the gearbox to the clamps before going on to the linkage. A few of us have already beefed up the heat insulation on the OEM cables by adding aftermarket heat insulation to try and avoid any heat induced seizures.

Great Pic. Thanks Techieboy. I'm sure my exhaust looked different. I'm going to pop round again and take a picture. Is that the standard one, or aftermarket ? Or do I get banned from the forum for even suggesting you would have a mere standard one... Zuber

I think Techie has a tullet. Surprised me though as my tullet is right next to (and I mean RIGHT next to) the driveshaft heatshield.

Yerp, I've certainly got a 3" Tullet system now (and subjective reports from Le Mans said it sounded reasonably quiet with the modified tailpipes in place) but not sure whether that pic might be of one of the many iterations of the various Piper systems. It kind of looks like the Tullett because of the witness mark on the bottom of the downpipe from the Spitfire brace bar but I'm not 100% sure. Had too many exhausts on this car over the years and the bad memories mean I try to blank them out.

I'm interested in a noise test on that new tailpipe. :poke:

Yep, me too. I'll sort something out over the next few days. Might even take it up to Bedford Autodrome and get them to run it round the circuit a couple of times with their monitoring equipment. To my ears, it still sounded loud in the car, though maybe a slightly different type of noise. But, everyone I asked to keep an ear out for it said it sounded fine and quieter than Sutol's Milltek SC car and much quieter than Rally's SC'd car which also has a Tullett on, when I was at full throttle going up the main straight. There were some pretty noisy cars there this weekend and mine was certainly not the loudest but it was the first time on track I'd actually noticed the noise from other cars I was following. The enclosed filter has also made a healthy difference to the noise heard outside the car.

Interesting stuff. I've just put in a decat silencer and thats made some difference but the main difference is at low load. What is interesting is that cheapo wirewool / glass packing has a greater effect that the uber high temp tullet packing. Obviously it will only last a wee while though. I'm thinking of making up a 2x2.25" tailpipe section to see how that fares. Sorry for the thread hijack BTW

Had another look. They are closer to the exhaust than I thought. Touching...

Taking the bracket off and shifting the cables across buys just a little room maybe a cm or so, but you have to force them back.

I think the cables are shorter than they should be. But will have to try and improvise something.

Would you guys go with wrapping with metal heat shielding like on oem cables or does fiberglass heat shield make more sense ?

I'd go both, but not much room...

I used this stuff and it seems to have stood the test of time okay but my cables aren't sat on the exhaust itself.

I used some bits of nimbus wrapped around the cables. From your picture it looks like the cables are on the wrong side of the exhaust? Unless I'm missinterpreting it. Try comparing to techies earlier pic which I thing is viewed from the back whereas yours is viewed front to back....I think!

That seems to makes sense !

Well spotted, I kept moving pic around trying to figure out why it looked different. Assuming we are interpreting it correctly, the old ones were fitted wrong (explains why it had some extra coat hangers holding them back). Can't really blame the mechanic, the old ones were fitted in the wrong place and he routed the new ones the same way...

He was cursing how hard it had been, might have been a bit easier if the cables were going the right way in...

I might be speaking too soon though. Best wait till we have tried getting them in the other side.

Thanks guys...

By the way, since you guys are Exhaust 'Experts'. Any idea if mine a standard exhaust or a poncy one ? Previous owner claimed it was upgraded one. I was told standard exhaust sound really dull. This one actually sounds quite good when coming off the gas. Might just be because it has a hole in it somewhere  Zuber

Looks like a stock downpipe but may have a different back box. A VSE gives lots of nice burbles and pops on lift off .

techie which diameter did you need? might have to measure mine though as I have one of the cablecraft iterations and they seem to be abit chunkier than oem.

Cables fitted. And back on the road... Cables on the right side this time. Though the garage must have started the car at some point to move it and melted one of the cables a bit on the exhaust :angry2: Doesn't seem to have done any internal harm as shift is now smooth again. Can't beleive the old pair were fitted incorrectly from the factory, so must have been removed/replaced at some point... Didn't have time to order Speed Shield and none of the motor factors seemed to have anything similar. So in the end, went with DIY option. Lots of fiberglass matting wrapped in aluminum tape. Thanks for the help guys. Thanks guys. I'd buy you all a beer, but I'm not allowed to B) Zuber
