Got my annual service and oil change coming up in a couple of weeks. Just wondering if it's usual practice to replace the sump plug. Also I am tempted to do it any way and replace it with a fancy magnetic one currently on eBay. But it's a fiver for a bolt! what is the usual price for a standard replacement plug?

Yeah it usually goes back on or the oil tends to drop straight back out! :P :D

No it's not usual practice, you would normally just replace the washer if the threads of the bolt are still good and the bolt or torx head are not rounded. No real need to even replace that each time as long as it can still create a decent seal.

You say it's a fiver like it is overly expensive, It's not really for a decent bit of machined and anodised alloy with a strong magnet. I have one fitted don't know if it has picked up much so far as I am yet to do a change with it fitted but it can't be a bad thing to have no matter how little it collects.

Worth it buy one.

From memory its a T45 and if you use something other than a T45 you will round it and then need a new sump plug. As said already, just the little o-ring is required.

I popped into my local vauxhall dealer to pick up a air/oil filter and a sump plug washer, the parts guy looked on his computer and said they don't have a sump plug, he went on to show the the parts diagram that to be fair didn't show one but i insisted it did, i don't think he believed me but he went to ask a mechanic and then returned with my sump plug washer!

The chap in Bath Vauxhall didn't find it either. But he had the good sense to go straight for the Astra G where it was listed. Did he really think they would have deleted the sump plug from the Astra G engine when they put it in the VX? rant

What a bunch of idiots...this is because the plug is on the oil fliter assemberly not the sump itself. why dont they use a bit of common sence like I did and think; if the plug in not on the sump where else could it be... :angry2:

Pretty sure mines on the sump? Anyway, those magnetic sump plugs, are they really such a good idea? I mean is it possible that the magnet will collect enough sh*t that it builds up then becomes too big for the magnet so you end up with a lump of swarf bobbing around it the sump? Genuine question, I've never tried one! I'm thinking about a magnet we used to have in the garage when I was a kid that found its way into a box of nails, when you lifted the magnet out some of the nails would fall off in a clump

If it's collecting that much, then you've got bigger things to worry about.
