I know this one has been done to death and I have read the past posts on this - but I still have a question. I note that some people have used hammerite and other people have posted not to use hammerite. What is the reason for this?

The hammerite will react with other paints or laquers. I have just done my AP 4pots. I used high temp engine bay paint in matt black. Then got some high temp laquer to give them a satin black finish. Halfords do the black paint but I found that your local motorfactor has better stuff. Laquer was from ebay.

I've always used it and its been fine. Best if the calipers and paint are warm as it smoothes better. Painting them outside in the winter isn't the best idea I had haha

Thanks - zoobeef did you paint onto existing paint, or did you strip your calipers first?

Gave it a bit of a sand but it was more just to key it rather than removing old stuff

For the best finish they'd need sand blasting and powder coating. Painting will never look as good as that. What colour do new ones come in? That's the other option haha

I did mine a few year back now using paint from eliseparts. Pretty good finish but when looking closer you can see slight brush strokes. Wonder if a spray paint is available that is suitable for brakes…

I did mine with special caliper sray paint when doing my refit on the car earlier this year. Got a great smoot gloss finish and still looks as good as new but it should do as the paint was 20 pounds a tin (1 tin did all 4 calipers)

Take a look at a pic below. see my gallery for more pics

I used high temp engine paint. I painted the calipers (rear) off the car and then fitted them. A drip of brake fluid soon had it all lifting . Hammerite or the proper stuff for me now.

VXtyrant, another option is plasticote high temp spraypaint (labelled as barbeque paint/log burner paint) it goes up to 450degs . Though its a more matt/satin black so may not be bling enough for some (also unsure on solubility wrt brake fluid). I resprayed my VSE tips with it and it looks brilliant and ive got shitloads left over to use on the logburner if i need it!
