I came onto this thread as I have to replace my fog light but all thats seems to be going on is coco pops and Jg having some form of vx related bromance! I've put off fitting a new one since le mans and am starting to think this will be a next summer job. Presonally if I do get to be bothered enough to do it (never turned those lights on in 9 years so its not urgent), plan to do it via the underneath and take of the front plate to get at it all. Just take the whole assembly out, bracket and all and do it on the workbench.

Which is fine Matt, but there's bugger all room to get the whole assembly back in past the crash box and clam once its assembled . We had to practically assemble it in-situ.

I removed them and fitted the brake cooling duct kit with the clam on and obviously the radiator shroud in place. Just takes a bit of manoeuvring of the assembly to get them to the right angle to extract through the headlight aperture. If you want real fun and games, try inserting a very large heat gun in there to heatshrink the ducting onto the back of the foglight recess, whilst also inserting your other hand (and arm) to hold said heatshrink in place.

I've now completed this hideous horrible task! Putting it all back together was worse than taking it apart!

You gotta love how a little job on the VX turns in a multi-week project. Like changing a foglight bulb : - remove headlamp - fumble around until you figure out that the foglight has melted into 2 pieces. - reassemble everything as you obviously will be needing parts for this one - search for 2nd hand foglight (mondeo st ones will do the trick, with some careful connector trimming, also vectra gsi) - buy and wait for delivery - remove headlight again - spend ages figuring out that you've to remove the foglight mounting plate using 3 screws - spend ages removing the screws cos they're seized - round one of them in the process, swear and blind a lot - attempt to remove foglight only to find out it needs disassembly from the plate before it'll come out - fumble a lot, swear a lot, adjust the height adjusting screw to fully high, eventually figure out the plastic release clip - and finally get it out, phew reassembly should be easy (yeah right!). - decide to test the new foglight before reassembly - find out at this point that you are locked out of the car, keys in and engine running. - break into car, cue funny looks from neighbours - eventually get in, test foglights, all good. - try reassembly, nearly break arm on first go, then finally utilising the hole where the foglight should be to get the screwdriver in - reassembly done after some foglight & mounting bracket contortion - figure out at this point that you don't know which way the spring thing goes - consult old foglight for proper setup - connect cable, test again, wooo hooo ! After all that the new bulb works! And the drivers headlight has gone again. Gotta love VXs. Although I now have a spare foglight if anyone wants the back off it or parts from it ...

Martin, if you dont use the fog lights, why not extract both the assemblies and black out the switch on the dashboard (for MOT compliance)? That way you save yourself lots of bother, 2.0 Kg of weight and save time and money.

They are NOT mot failures thumbsup It was the MOT guy that pointed it out to me and said, don't worry, they're not an MOT requirement.

I think we may have had this discussion before. Isn't the case if they are fitted then they are supposed to work? Like if a spare tyre is in the car then it must have good tread and be inflated?

Q. Will my car fail an MOT because the front fog lights don’t work?
A. No. Front fogs are not part of the MOT and are not checked. The rear fog light must be in working order however

I don't know if that is correct. The actual regulations state the following :

4.5. Front and rear fog lamps
4.5.1. Condition and
operation
Visual inspection and by operation. (a) Defective light source.
( B) Defective lens.
© Lamp not securely attached.
4.5.2. Alignment
(X) (
b
)
by operation and using a headlamp aiming device Front fog lamp out of horizontal
alignment when the light pattern
has cut-off line

thumbsup. One of my fog lamps hasn't worked for 3 years. There are meant to be 2 on the back right  :beat:  The fog lamp section has this. That doc also applies to reversing lamps, which are also not part of the MOT (and is marked with (a) ) ( a ) ‘requirements’ are laid down by type-approval requirements at the date of approval, first registration or first entry into service as well as retrofitting obligations or national legislation in the country of registration.

Thats the EU legislation Bob. The MOT adopts some but not all of it. The UK MOT manual site here http://www.ukmot.com/1-1.asp has no reference to Front Fogs, only Rear fogs.

Can confirm that mine has passed MOTs with no issues with non working front fogs. Rear needs to be working however. For all the effort they sound like I'm sorely tempted to not bother and look into removing them completly to save weight and hassle. Guess I'll see what it's all like when clam comes off this winter.
