Carbon Fibre Rear Diffusers - Full Set - £350

The VX220 benefits from a flat floor design which helps ease airflow under the car. However all the benefit of this design is wasted as the rear clam sweeps up from the flat floor thus generating lift at the back. It is this effect (partly) which people complain about on track when they lock the rear brakes in cornering. Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image
Rear diffusers will never generate high levels of downforce (unless they're enormous like on a DTM car) but they can be designed to direct underbody airflow and help reduce lift. Constructed entirely from pre-preg carbon fibre; they are strong, durable and look great on the car. Rear ground clearance is barely affected and they adhere to MOT rules on size. They are a DIY fit as they use existing holes drilled in the clam for the undertray.

Want the 60kg of rear downforce at 100mph but can't afford the Thorney rear wing? Simple! Just load a few sacks of gravel in the boot for trackday!

If you genuinely want to stop the car going light, there are 3 things you can do (in order of cost/ease of doing). 1. Get your geo checked if you haven't already, dont go mad on camber or it will feel light at high speed. 2. Build your own front splitter. Plywood is great and cheap, a 4" projection from the front of the bumper would be good for road. Fill and sand a curve to mate with the bumper. Easy to do, perhaps 4 hours work. Those 2 will help a lot, paricularily the splitter IMO. If you need more downforce: 3. Install a wing, in clean(ish) air, mount to chassis, delta adjustment required, at least 1:8 chord ratio so it works as an aerofoil rather than a deflector. I dont run with a rear floorpan or even the OEM difusser incidentally and have found the above 3 mods really work.

Thanks Nev, all sound advice! I have set up the Geo myself with some basic equpment but think i'll take it to Christchurch tyre near me as they have a proper Hunter machine that checks 6 adjustments so i think that's the best place to start from what you've said!

100% cosmetic with the exception of 120mph+ according to my highly sensitive arse dyno :D where I think it makes a slight difference, not significant but a little bit at very high speed. The context I say this is in; on the nurburgring where there are sections where you are doing between 120-140mph through bends. The only change I had made to my car was the diffuser and it felt a little bit more stable at the rear at those speeds. But we're not talking a big difference, it's definitely not downforce but perhaps a little bit of reduced lift? Either that or my sphincter valve has been taking brave pills. Given that there are very few places on this planet you can do those sorts of speeds on a bend, then let's call it cosmetic. The MMG 6 fin is a tidy piece that looks mean. The short TaT is the sexiest. I'm also fond of the Jimsan diffuser which I have, but they are a collectors item now.

They add weight, raise the chance of damage when reversing towards kerbs, seem to throw more muck on the back of your car, but get one. Becuase vx's without them just look weedy somehow. Almost all the people who know what theyre doing and know diffusers arent doing a lot,and have done all the top mods, still fit them because they finish off the cars rear nicely. Martin s

:yeahthat:

I love my diffuser (Tat short rounded) but im under no illusions that it has any aerodynamic effect whatsoever. I'm very rarely even going fast enough to worry about aero anyway. If you're unhappy with how the car handles as mentioned look towards phyiscal grip first (Geo, suspension compnents, tyres) and even before that address the way you drive the car with some training. Aero looks cool, fact, but very few of us will get anything out of it.
