My car has lost coolant for quite some time now. I have been just topping it up. Never any sign of a leak. Its at Courtenays at the mo for a gearbox problem so I mentioned the coolant. They did a test which they say indicates a blown head gasket. Its probably internal as there is no external leak but the water does obviously go somewhere, So yet more expense, Talk about not running these cars on a fiver. More like not running it on a grand or two! So anyone else had HGF. The cars been running fine but will there be any other effects of an internally leacking HG?

Are you going through a lot of water? Guessing you're off the standard Rad. Did they pressure test it?

I suppose I was topping it up every few months? They did a test that identifies a leaking HG. It was positive. I'm sure they would have thought of the rad first.

I know the feeling mine cost £2400 for a service lol! Mine was leaking out of the bleed nipple, if you remove the near side headlamp you can inspect the bleed nipple there. I had a leak when the car got too hot due to a knackered fan not kicking in! Not something like a perished header tank? Cheers!

See if the coolant smells off (like car fumes), this is a good indication of failure. Hgf isn't that common on this engine, although it can still happen obviously. But this isn't a rover forum...

Water inward headgasket blow = white smoke Oil inward headgasket blow = blue smoke Oil - water blow (interal) = mayo in the oil, mayo in the coolant Water or Oil outward blow = oil/water pissing out of the head Or a combination of the above. Most common failure of headgaskets in my experience seems to be either between cylinders 1 and 2 or 3 and 4. Not sure about the z20let though  How much coolant you using? And get the timing belt done at the same time as they will have to take it off anyway :)

mine got stuck in hampton court flower show traffic jam for four hours with no working rad fans, I think this contaminated the HG, it still ran fine for a couple of years plenty of power but it pressurised the water system. Actual fix costs peanuts, gasket set and head bolts. Its not that difficult DIY job. Combine it with a cambelt change + water pump.

Mine has started sipping water again I think I will change my head gasket as a precaution, as I don't know how long mine was without the rad fans!

Thats ok if you can do DIY. for me its an hourly labour job. The cambelt and water pump was only done 7000 miles ago.

Steve: You were getting similar water boiling/steam problems to me on track. Was this down to HG then?
