Hi,

I have decided to get the geometry done on my car - it handles bloody well, but I just think it should feel differently to how it does, I can't explain it but I just think it should feel more inspiring like it wants to go around corners quickly rather than me forcing it to. Does that make sense???

It's on standard wheels, tyres and suspension and therefore I think I am best off sticking with the OEM settings......

Can anyone confirm that these are the standard settings? i found these on an old thread on here but i have also seen different 'standard settings'!

I am taking it to a local Lotus specialist - needless to say they have the Elise settings but have never done a VX so asked if I could provide them with the settings I wanted.

Thanks in advance....i know this subject has been done to death!

Hi Chris, All the tyres are less than 2 yrs old as I have replaced them all. The car has done 72k now most of that around bumpy London streets (previous owner lived in London and used it as a daily driver) so I think there's a good chance the geometry has been knocked out!

The settings you attach are from the GM TIS so are correct. Standard settings are very much the idiot proof set up and although I agree that you don't want or need to go too radical, the normal first desirable from a geo re-set is to reduce the understeer characteristic, so reduce or remove the -ve camber on the front and reduce the -ve toe at the rear.

Just let them put their preferred Lotus settings on , but ask them to check the steering trackrods first for play, in fact check the whole front assembly for play as otherwise it will be a pointless exercise.

OK thanks i thought they must be, but as I said I saw some other settings banded about which were different but also stated as standard (perhaps NA)

I was dead set on keeping it OEM but you have raised a valid point in that the understeeryness (new word!) of it has always bugged me. I have driven BM's most of my driving life and understeer when pushing hard has never been an issue, so the VX can be a little frustrating. I usually instinctively give it a bit more boot to correct the understeer which results in it more understeer! As I only end up doing about 2k a year (dire i know) I never really learn to drive it differently.

The problem is if I go to a Lotus setting i.e. Elise wont that make a bit of a mish mash what with the wheels being different sizes etc?

I am definitely up for reducing the understeer characteristic as long I don't turn go overboard and make it a suicide weapon - Tiff Needell I am not!! When you say reduce the -ve camber on the front and reduce the -ve toe at the rear - how much are we talking?

-1.5 deg neg camber on the front , with the amount of mileage you do , tyre wear won't be problem. similar rear neg camber -2 deg , get them to fit new hub carrier bolts at the same time, these are just a couple of quid but critical. there will be some tolerances in the manufacture of the chassis and wishbones, so if they can zero these to make everything equal then great. toe settings are front 0 deg straight ahead, or a very small amount of toe-out rear set toe in front caster , should be equal both sides , and a bit more is nice to have then book a walshy day at carlimits.com
