I bought my na about a month ago, and yes the sound system is pretty pants! Not that bothered as I bought the car for the driving pleasure, but I wondered if my Philips GTP 1715 speakers were standard fit i.e. will replacing them with a £40/£50 aftermarket set improve things. I've heard people referring to the "standard VDO items" - are Philips and VDO the same company?

From memory Philips & VDO are the same mate.... Try a search to find out what others have fitted ... I've still got the standard fit items :(

I am in a similiar position to you, have had my car only a few days and were not sure if the Phillips speakers were standard but knew they were crap. Have now ordered some Alpine SPS170A which have been mentioned on this site and will fit straight in, I am sure they will sound better and they look cool too.

I have the Alpines - they might look good but who cares - you cant see them!! They are certainly better than the VDO/philips ones however mine has a Kenwwod sub connected also so that changes things quite a lot.

Sorry - put in for by the previous owner known as GAVIN on here - could PM him if you wish - messing about with ICE is not something I generally get into.

You can get them from Halfords for £100 or online for around £75 from http://www.hendoncar....co.uk/home.htm probably less if you look around.

I am still expecting to need a sub because I got used to one in my old car, when I figure out where to put one.

The VDO speakers are not very good as you will already know. Our kid and I who both have an NA have just fitted 16.5cm infinity speakers (the VDO speakers are 16.5cm). We bought them from Halfords for £69.99. These make a massive difference and also make the VDO head unit sound almost respectable. They are pretty easy to fit the only problem we came across was that four small holes have to be drilled in each aperture to make the speakers fit with the infinity logos in the right place. This is no problem on the drivers side but on the passenger side we had to remove the three Allen bolts in the seat that are accessible this gives enough room to lean the seat forward to drill the holes. All in all the entire job can be done in less than half an hour and it is well worth it. Micknw chinky chinky
